Newly-promoted Washington Football Team starting quarterback Kyle Allen will get his baptism of fire in Week 5 against the streaking Los Angeles Rams. He was recently named by Washington head coach Ron Rivera as the team's QB1 moving forward, taking over the reins from sophomore gunslinger Dwayne Haskins.

The former Ohio State Buckeye had dismal performances for the team in the early stages of the season. He posted 314 passing yards on 32-of-45 passes completed without a touchdown scored in his final game as the team's starting quarterback. His inefficiencies resulted to a 31-17 loss to the dominant Baltimore Ravens.

With Dwayne Haskins now demoted to as deep as the team's third-string quarterback, it is already highly anticipated that he will get traded in the coming weeks, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora. It is also important to note that Haskins was not drafted by Washington's current coaching regime, which was not high on him coming out of college at all.

Now finding themselves in a 1-3 record heading into Week 5 proceedings, Rivera instated a familiar face to play under center. Him and Kyle Allen had previously spent time together as members of the Carolina Panthers organization where Rivera had his previous head coaching stint.

The undrafted third-year playmaker already had significant NFL experience as he served as the backup to former Panthers QB1 Cam Newton who missed most of the 2018 and 2019 seasons due to ailing injuries. Allen was also an understudy to Washington's current offensive coordinator Scott Turner who was previously the quarterbacks coach for the Panthers under Rivera.

An underlying storyline in the situation is returning veteran Alex Smith who progressed in the team's depth chart as their current QB2 behind Allen after Dwayne Haskins' benching. His promotion now puts him in a better situation to make his comeback on the gridiron almost two years after sustaining a freak injury against the Houston Texans back in 2018.

According to CBS Sports, Smith managed to begin the season on the active roster after his training camp showing and is continuing to impress the coaches with his amazing recovery. The expectation is that after a week or two more practice time and serving as the backup quarterback that Smith would be able to take over for Allen as starter.

The following weeks will see interesting developments in Washington's camp if Haskins will indeed be traded and if the returning Smith will be able to make a full comeback on the field.
