The Washington Football Team is reportedly nearing the final stages of hiring Marty Hurney as its new GM, Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network reports. Washington has yet to make the announcement, but should make the deal official within the day. The move will reunite Hurney with current Washington coach Ron Rivera.

Initial rumblings that the two former members of the Panthers staff reportedly drew mixed reviews from around the league. Many believed Rivera is just doing this to bring in his own “men” from Carolina into Washington. Nonetheless, bringing in a familiar face for Rivera might be what's best for the 65-year old.

As mentioned, Rivera and Hurney already have a previous relationship. They both worked with the Carolina Panthers on two separate stints in the previous decade. Rivera served as Panthers coach from 2011 to 2019, before accepting his new gig at Washington.

Hurney began his career as a PR intern for Washington over three decades ago. He became an assistant GM for the San Diego Chargers for seven years, before joining the Carolina Panthers in 1998. Hurney took over as Carolina's general manager from 2002 up until his first termination from the team in 2012. After five years, the Panther's rehired Hurney as interim GM. He secured the full-time gig once again in 2018, but was fired for the second time by the franchise just last month in December 2020.

Rivera's first season manning the sidelines for the Washington Football Team saw them finish with a 7-9 campaign. Despite the losing record, they still won the NFC East division.
