The New York Yankees were dealt a bit of an injury scare on Saturday after slugger Joey Gallo was forced to exit their game early after picking up an apparent knock. Manager Aaron Boone provided an update on Gallo's status on Sunday ahead of the Yankees' clash with the Royals, for which Gallo was not included in the lineup. Via Erik Boland, Boone revealed Gallo is currently “day-to-day” as he deals with tightness in his left groin.

While Gallo won't be able to take the field Sunday against the Royals, it's certainly a good sign that Boone is describing the left-hander as being day-to-day, indicating his ailment won't require a stint on the Injured List.

In reality, getting the slugger some days off may be in the best interest of the team. Gallo has gotten off to an abysmal start to the 2022 season, slashing .180/.275/.295 with 2 home runs and 5 RBI across 61 at-bats in 21 games. Gallo has struck out 29 times and drawn just 8 walks this year. His struggles at the plate have been plain for fans to see, though he's been playing better over the past week.

Both of Gallo's homers this season came during the Yankees' previous series against the Orioles, and prior to his exit against the Royals on Saturday, Gallo had recorded 2 hits in as many at-bats. It was just his second multi-hit game of the season, but unfortunately, he came up lame with a groin injury and was forced to exit early.

Boone didn't indicate precisely when he expects Gallo to get back into the lineup, but it shouldn't be long before the 28-year-old is cleared to return to action.
