The New York Yankees are on their way to their first losing season in decades. As it comes to a close, they are giving fans a minor concession and preparing for next season by bringing up some of their top minor league prospects.

Preseason top prospect Anthony Volpe made the opening-day roster as the starting shortstop. In 132 games this season, he has posted a .695 OPS, 95 hits, 54 RBI, 21 stolen bases and 19 home runs. Youngsters Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswald Peraza have joined him this season in less regular roles, too. Even more are about to come up, following the lead of Everson Pereira, who was called up near the end of August.

Jasson Dominguez and Austin Wells, two of the Yankees' top prospects, will make their big-league debuts once rosters expand in September. Dominguez's debut has been highly anticipated for years as one of the most intriguing physical specimens to pass through the minor leagues.

Volpe loves seeing all the guys he played with on the Somerset Patriots and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, according to Bryan Hoch of

“For me personally, it's awesome,” Volpe said, via These are guys I've played with my whole career, really. Just what it means to them, and kind of what I got to experience is amazing, so for these guys to be able to go through it and just get a taste of everything, I'm super happy for them.”

At the same time that the prospects got called up to the big leagues, the Yankees moved on from veterans Harrison Bader and Josh Donaldson, whose release from the team was another move that excited fans. Whether the new youngsters in New York do anything of note for the remainder of the season remains to be seen. But at the very least, the team is keeping things interesting as a disappointing campaign draws to a close.

After notching a winning season every year since 1992, the Yankees are below .500 deep into the season and could see that winning streak end. Their six-year playoff streak is in serious jeopardy. The franchise’s hope is that the young players that will close out this season will be able to help kickstart a new streak of winning seasons beginning in 2024.
