The latest Subway Series between the New York Yankees and New York Mets started with a victory for the little brother. The Mets built a six-run lead through the first four innings and won by a final score of 9-7 at Citi Field. Gerrit Cole took the loss in a brutal start.

Cole, making his second start of the season after working back from a right elbow injury, allowed four home runs in as many innings. He surrendered six runs, seven hits and four walks in total. Although 44 of his 72 pitches went for strikes, he didn’t record a single strikeout. This is just the second time in Cole's career that he went that deep into a game without any strikeouts. The other instance came in 2016 when he was with the Pittsburgh Pirates and allowed just one run in 7.0 innings.

After the loss to the Mets, Cole discussed what went wrong and how disheartening it was to have such a bad performance.

“Disappointing. Didn't really give us a good chance to win tonight,” Cole said of his performance. “Didn’t execute enough good pitches. Just kind of dug us a hole…Just not great command of [my fastball] throughout the evening. Trying to find a blend of intensity and command. Being able to put it where we want both inside the strike zone and out.”

The Yankees depend heavily on Cole, who won his first Cy Young award last season. He should be better as the season goes on but they will need him to approach his top form very badly.

Yankees stumbling following hot start to 2024 season

The Yankees still have one of the best records in all of MLB at 52-29 but they have won just three of their last 10 games. Their immaculate starting pitching rotation has started to slip a little bit. Even though that was somewhat expected with several pitchers performing extremely well, including rookie Luis Gil, it has also coincided with a dry spell at the plate.

Lineup depth is once again a major concern for the Yankees, who are getting excellent production from Aaron Judge (1.128 OPS) and Juan Soto (1.004 OPS) but, with Giancarlo Stanton out of the lineup due to a hamstring injury, lack high-level threats around them. This was already a problem with just Judge. New York did tack on seven runs against the Mets but it can’t allow itself to let two Hall-of-Fame-level outfielders go to waste.

If the Yankees don’t turn things around soon, they could allow the Baltimore Orioles to pass them for the lead in the division. They’re still in an advantageous situation but it could get pretty rocky pretty soon.
