The New York Yankees are hungry to win their first World Series championship since the 2009 season. Of course, that's the goal for the most decorated franchise in the history of the sport on an every-year basis. While they have regularly been a playoff team in the years since they beat the Phillies in the championship round, they have rarely looked like the best team in baseball. They have been regularly stopped by the Houston Astros and other teams in the playoffs. However, the addition of Juan Soto gives the Yankees a new and refreshing look in 2024.

Soto is one of the game's top superstars and he has been playing at the Major League Level since the 2018 season when he was 19. As he hits his prime years at the age of 25, there is talk in New York of the Bronx Bombers working out a long-term deal to keep Soto in pinstripes for the majority of his career.

Soto and Yankees both appear to want a long-term deal

Both owner Hal Steinbrenner and Soto have given indications that they would like to see the relationship become long term. The owner has made public comments that he would like to see Soto remain in a Yankees uniform beyond the current season.

Soto seemed to welcome those comments, and apparently has given his agent Scott Boras instructions to follow through. “My door’s always open,” Soto said. ” Whenever he wants to start talking to Scott and all his people…they’re always open to hearing what he has (to say).”

Normally, Boras will not let his clients sign new deals while they are still engaged with their current team because he believes he can game better terms for them when they are on the open market. However, Soto apparently is happy in New York where fans have welcomed him and he may want to make the deal sooner rather than later.

Boras is considered the top agent in the business and he likes to do things his way, but Soto is still in charge of his own career. If he does give Boras a more direct message to get the deal done, the agent will have to listen.

Solid start for Soto with the Yankees

Soto is off to a solid start to his association with the Yankees. In addition to playing a solid right field in which he has shown off a strong throwing arm, he has been quite productive at the plate.

Soto is slashing .310/.408/.530 with 9 home runs, 34 runs batted in and 29 runs scored.

The outfielder started his career with the Washington Nationals, and he exploded onto the scene as a teenager when he slashed .292/.406/.517 with 22 home runs and 70 RBI in 2018.

Juan Soto had back-to-back sensational seasons in 2020 and 2021, and he is known for his ability to hit the ball for power to all fields and also for his tremendous eye at the plate. He had 145 bases on balls to lead the majors in 2021 and he followed that with 135 walks in 2022 while splitting his time between the Nationals and San Diego Padres.
