The Los Angeles Rams are coming off a return to the playoffs this past season. They finished with a 10-6 record and lost in the divisional round to the Green Bay Packers.
The Rams made some moves in the off-season that have set them up for even more success this season.
Back in 2018 the Rams were in the Super Bowl and the roster finally looks ready to get back to that level. While they may not be favorites, the scheme and talent should make the team a contender.
The Rams started off the off-season with a big move as they traded for quarterback Matthew Stafford. Stafford will instantly elevate the offense; he is a major upgrade over Jared Goff.
The Rams also added more talent in the draft. They added some underrated talent especially later in the draft. In the 4th round they got defensive tackle Bobby Brown III and Robert Rochell. These were steals in the draft and will help the team improve their already phenomenal defense.
They also signed an undrafted free agent who has a great shot at making the 2021 roster.
Rams offensive tackle Alaric Jackson
Although Alaric Jackson wasn't selected in the draft he was still a highly touted prospect. He was signed by the Rams with a $20,000 signing bonus which is rare for undrafted players. In college Jackson was a very experienced player as he spent 4 seasons at Iowa. Jackson earned All-Big Ten honors in all of his four seasons.
He was a very reliable lineman throughout his time at Iowa as he started all 42 games with the team. Jackson was projected to be a 6th round pick but fell all the way to free agency where the Rams picked him up. Although he may not be a starter right away he could be a solid backup. With the right coaching and development he could turn into a starter over time.
Article Continues BelowJackson has some flaws in his game that he will need to address with the Rams. He especially needs to work on his footwork as it seemed to decline in 2019 and 2020. Jackson also tends to let up before finishing the block which has hindered his pass blocking ability. While he has these flaws he also has many strengths.
Jackson is a solid run blocker and is able to gain leverage on blocks. He is also a very agile offensive lineman which will make him a scheme fit in head coach Sean McVay's offense.
Jackson should make the roster for the Rams and become a solid lineman for them in the future.
The Rams have put themselves in a good position to make some noise in the NFC. Stafford was a great trade for the team who will help the offense improve drastically. The defense is already great for the team and they got even better in the offseason. It seems L.A. has finally put itself back into contention after a great offseason.
The defense is so elite that an above average offense could lead them to the playoffs. Stafford will be able to lead them on that path and they could become a top 10 offense. Although they may not have the most stars on offense the scheme will help them elevate their performance.
Look for the Rams to make a run at the Super Bowl this season.
