The Indianapolis Colts have some important decisions to make this offseason. First, they must decide if they want to move forward with quarterback Carson Wentz, who certainly didn't play the way the franchise had hoped when they acquired him via a trade last offseason. Equally important, however, is the Colts' free agency period. Indianapolis is armed with a significant amount of cap space, though that doesn't automatically mean that they should go on a spending spree. The Colts still have to spend their money wisely to put the best possible team around Wentz, if they ultimately decide to keep things going with the former Philadelphia Eagles signal-caller. That said, here are two free agents that the Colts must avoid signing during the 2022 NFL free agency period.

2. Jadeveon Clowney

The Colts are quite familiar with Jadeveon Clowney, having played against him twice a year during the first five years of his career with the Houston Texans. Make no mistake, Clowney is a good pass-rusher. The Colts' biggest need is perhaps their pass rush. However, it just isn't wise for the Colts to spend their money on the 29-year-old during the free agency period. Clowney is coming off of a strong nine-sack season for the Browns, which also saw him register a solid 69.1 pass rushing grade from PFF. On paper, the two make sense for a partnership. However, the Colts should avoid Clowney, who has played a full season just once in his eight years in the league. If the Colts are going to be spending big on free agent pass rushers, they can find a safer option than Clowney this offseason, or simply opt to load up on talent in the draft, a rich year for pass rushers.

1. JuJu Smith-Schuster

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster is a strong NFL wide receiver. Would the Colts be better off with Smith-Schuster, than say, T.Y. Hilton, in the lineup? Probably. Smith-Schuster has a 1400-yard season under his belt and has scored seven or more touchdowns in a season three times, including a career-high nine this past year. However, Indianapolis should avoid signing the Steelers wideout for a couple of reasons. First, there are numbers that show that Smith-Schuster was better when he was playing next to an elite-level wideout, such as Antonio Brown. Since Brown left, Smith-Schuster's game has suffered. It seems that the Steelers wideout is better when he is paired with an alpha wide receiver. The Colts simply do not have that at the moment. Michael Pittman is well on his way- and could be a breakout year away from holding that title. However, as presently constructed, the Colts don't have the elite alpha at wideout to provide Smith-Schuster with the environment he seems to need in order to thrive.
