The 2022 summer transfer window will be the first summer window for Newcastle United under new ownership. The Saudi Public Investment Fund completed their takeover earlier this season and set about its mission to win trophies. January saw Newcastle welcome the arrival of the likes of Chris Wood, Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, and Matt Targett.

The new owners are expected to be big spenders in the summer window, considering their wealth dwarfs all other clubs in the world combined, and today we’re going to look at three summer targets for just that purpose.

Big money transfer targets for Newcastle United in 2022

1. Dean Henderson, Manchester United

At times in 2020 and 2021, it looked like Dean Henderson would usurp David de Gea's position as the number one goalkeeper for the Red Devils, but it was not to be. Reports have flown in all spring that Henderson would seek a move away from Manchester United unless incoming manager Erik ten Hag could promise him to be the first choice keeper in the 2022-23 season. Since that doesn't appear to be the case, following an excellent season from de Gea, Newcastle has planted itself firmly at the front of the queue for Henderson's services.

Henderson first made waves with back-to-back loans at Sheffield United, both in the Championship and the Premier League, where he showed himself to be a quality shot-stopper for them. Once he got back to Manchester he competed with de Gea for a while, but in the end, it was the Spaniard who won out. Nonetheless, over this period Henderson earned his first international cap, and seems poised to remain in the back of Gareth Southgate's mind as far as squad selection goes in the future.

In all likelihood it would wind up being one of the more expensive deals for a goalkeeper in recent years, not quite Kepa Arrizabalaga levels, but somewhere in the $25-35 million range would likely be reasonable for both parties. A move to Newcastle would also ensure Henderson the playtime necessary to work his way onto Southgate's England squad ahead of the World Cup in November/December. This, at least at present, appears all but guaranteed to happen for the Magpies, and it should offer an improvement over Martin Dubravka.

2. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Everton

Another England international who Newcastle is already rumored to be targeting heavily this summer, Dominic Calvert-Lewin's price depends entirely on one thing. Everton's relegation battle. Everton currently sits just two points clear of the drop zone, with Leeds and Burnley chasing them hard with two games to go. If the Toffees stay up, Calvert-Lewin's price will likely be somewhere in the $75-85 million range. If they suffer relegation, however, Calvert-Lewin will be available at a much cheaper price, considering he won't be interested in playing in the Championship.

Either way, Calvert-Lewin seems destined for St. James' Park, and he'll be quite the addition to the squad. Calvert-Lewin has notched 20 goals and four assists across the last two Premier League seasons, and it's worth noting he missed 16 games from August to December with a broken toe. If the Magpies are able to pull this signing off, they'll have seriously improved their ability to score goals, and I'm sure fans are already dreaming of his connection with Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron.

3. Paulo Dybala, CAM, Juventus

The cheapest of these three from a fee standpoint, Dybala would hypothetically join Newcastle on a free transfer from Juventus, though his wages would surely be the highest among the aforementioned players. With Dybala confirming himself that this would be his last season in Turin, a multitude of clubs joined the race to get his signature, Newcastle included. The likes of Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and Arsenal have all been linked to Dybala in addition to the Magpies, and that crowded of a field makes any signing more difficult.

Dybala has been a creative force for both club and country since he burst onto the scene at Palermo, and he continued that trend at Juve. The goals and assists weren't always there but Dybala's ability to create was never in doubt at Juve. In Serie A this season, Dybala notched 10 goals and five assists to go along with three goals and an assist in the Champions League. This kind of ability to create chances both for himself and others would blend beautifully with Newcastle's squad, as that's been their biggest issue at times this season. It will be a difficult signing, but if they can pull it off along with Henderson and Calvert-Lewin, Newcastle should be able to contend for European places in 2022-23. While he'd demand quite a hefty contract, Newcastle's new owners should be more than willing to meet his demands in order to bring in a big-name signing like himself.
