San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman is currently gearing up for his second go-around in the Bay Area after initially establishing himself as one of the best in the league as a member of the Seattle Seahawks.

After signing a three-year free agent contract en route to joining the 49ers last offseason, Sherman encountered quite the disappointing single-season effort in what would become a forgettable first year in San Francisco.

Now, with the 49ers much better as a team and Sherman already having one year in town under his belt, it can be expected that the former Seahawks standout and “Legion of Boom” leader will return to form in 2019-20.

Let's dive in and take a look at three early goals that Sherman should set for himself in the 2019 NFL season.

3. Record at least five interceptions during the 2019 regular season

As a member of the Seattle Seahawks, Richard Sherman served as a ball hawk year after year after year. He recorded multiple interceptions in each of his first seven NFL seasons, all of which came as a member of the Seahawks. However, in his first season in San Francisco with the 49ers, Sherman failed to record a single interception despite appearing in 14 regular season games.

If the 49ers are going to rebound and start to compete in the NFC, Sherman must return to form in 2019-20. After stringing together back-to-back eight-interception campaigns in Seattle in 2012 and 2013, Sherman continued to serve as a consistent defender en route to producing 32 interceptions in total during his prime with the Seahawks.

The 49ers badly need Sherman to register at least five interceptions — if not more — in 2019, while attempting to lead an up-and-coming defense that also features a few veteran players sprinkled in. He also needs to produce at least 10 pass break-ups next season after recording a single-season career-low four pass defenses last season.

2. Record 50 total tackles during the regular season

In his first season with the San Francisco 49ers, Sherman registered a mere 37 total tackles over the course of 14 regular season games. With 30 of those wrap-ups coming by way of the solo variety, Sherman's 37 total tackles almost marked a single-season career-low total for the veteran defensive back. The only time that Sherman made less tackles in a single season was in in 2017-18 as a member of the Seattle Seahawks. However, he made 35 total tackles over the course of just nine regular season games due to injuries.

Prior to the past two seasons, Sherman had never recorded less than 48 total tackles in a single season. Over the course of his last full 16-game regular season slate, which came with Seattle back in 2016, he notably posted a respectable 58 total tackles, a mark that was good for the second-best single-season total of his NFL career.

Again, if San Francisco is going to find any success in terms of stopping opposing offenses, Sherman must make some tackles to help his teammates up front — at least 50 of them at that.

1. Help lead San Francisco to the postseason

It will definitely be quite difficult for the San Francisco 49ers to win the NFC West division in 2019. However, it is entirely possible that the 49ers sneak into the postseason as a NFC Wild Card team with the Los Angeles Rams currently slated to runaway with the NFC West division.

Though the Seattle Seahawks could be pesky per usual, the Arizona Cardinals shouldn't win more than five regular season games, leaving the 49ers in prime position to finish in second place in the divisional standings.

Even so, Sherman and company will need to defeat the Rams and Seahawks at least one time apiece while defeating the lowly Cardinals on both occasions that these teams meet up. If the 49ers can finish with at least 10 regular season wins, the up-and-coming franchise could very well take over one of the two NFC Wild Card spots when all is said and done.

One can presume that the NFC West, NFC East, NFC North, and NFC South could all have several competitive teams enter the fold late in the season. If the 49ers are going to make a statement, the Atlanta Falcons, Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, and Carolina Panthers must come up short in some capacity down the stretch.

If Sherman can help lead San Francisco back to the postseason, all will be forgotten in terms of his disappointing campaign from 2018. Not only that, but Sherman can make a name for himself outside of Seattle, which now seems like it was ages ago that the veteran defender helped lead the Seahawks to a Super Bowl title alongside the heralded “Legion of Boom.”
