The Phoenix Suns are once again one of the best teams in basketball after losing in the NBA Finals a season ago.

Although Phoenix didn't make many mistakes last year, they certainly could have used a backup center because DeAndre Ayton got into some foul trouble against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks which led for Giannis to score at will. Phoenix is going to want to make sure that they do not have any mistakes this season because they are surely a championship contender and want to win one this year.

In order for Phoenix to avoid any mistakes, they're going to have to make some tough decisions towards the back end of the season. Let's take a look at three mistakes that the Suns must avoid in order to get back to another NBA final.

Suns Must Avoids 2022

3. Have to get a backup guard

The Suns are going to have some interesting decisions to make at the deadline and the first option that they might decide to part way with could be Cam Payne. He just hasn't looked great this season and he certainly isn't necessarily somebody that the Suns are going to want to play that back up guard position when Devin Booker and Chris Paul are off the court. Last season in the playoffs, he looked like he was going to be the backup point guard for this team.

Unfortunately for the Suns, he just hasn't played all that great this season and that has led to some questioning about them going to get a backup point guard. They are definitely going to need somebody who can eat about seven to 15 minutes a night in the playoffs at the guard position so Phoenix has to make sure that they go out and get somebody.

2. Don't get over their heads

It's easy for an NBA team to see the success that they've had over the past two seasons and notice that they are arguably the best team in the NBA. This is exactly what the Suns have to be feeling but they cannot get complacent and have to realize that their path to a finals is going to be tougher than it was a season ago.

Phoenix is arguably the best team in the Western Conference and the only team that you can really make a comparison to the Suns is the Golden State Warriors. Fortunately for Phoenix, they have a good inside game because DeAndre Ayton is one of the best screen rollers in all of the NBA and whenever you have Chris Paul running that pick-and-roll, your team is going to usually find success. Factor in that the Warriors also do not have a good interior defense and the Suns should be able to match up pretty well with them come playoff time.

Even if the Warriors do not have the best interior defense, they still have arguably the greatest point guard of all time who can explode and hit 10 three-pointers in any game. The path to the finals this year isn't going to be easy, but as Phoenix has shown throughout the regular season so far and last year throughout the playoffs, they are legit and they're going to try to win an NBA title after losing one a season ago.

1. Can't trade depth at the break unless it's for another star

The Phoenix Suns have to be very careful about what they do decide to do at the NBA trade deadline because they are arguably the deepest team in the NBA.

Phoenix has found so much success this season because they do have plenty of guys off the bench who can come in and be immediate impact type of guys while helping their team still have serviceable minutes while their starters are off the court.

Just like every other championship contender, teams are going to be looking to make moves at the deadline. The Suns cannot trade away some of their key role pieces unless they are going to get back a superstar that they can pair next to Chris Paul and Devin Booker. Trading somebody like Cam Johnson, Mikal Bridges, or even DeAndre Ayton probably will not be in the Suns' best interest unless they can get some guys back who they feel are better than them at the moment and can help their title chances. The only way that either of these three guys should be moved is if you're going to go and get a guy like Karl Anthony- Towns who could potentially replace somebody like Ayton if they do decide to not give him the supermax for whatever questionable reason that would be.
