The Minnesota Timberwolves had a putrid 19-45 record before the 2019-20 season was suspended due to COVID-19. The franchise was on its way to missing the playoffs for the 15th time in the last 16 years.

However, the Timberwolves did make a splash at the 2020 trade deadline by acquiring All-Star point guard D'Angelo Russell from the Golden State Warriors. Minnesota sent former No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins to the Dubs for D'Lo, giving Karl-Anthony Towns his much-needed point guard.

Russell averaged 21.7 points and 6.6 assists in 12 games with the Timberwolves. He figures to be the perfect floor general to lead the team's offense moving forward.

Despite having two All-Stars on the team, though, the Timberwolves are a ways away from even being a playoff team in the Western Conference. Minnesota's front office, led by president Gersson Rosas, has plenty of moves to make to surround KAT and Russell with more talent.

If the 2019-20 season gets canceled altogether, here are three possible moves Rosas and Co. can make to steer the team to the right direction.

1. Re-sign Malik Beasley

Beasley will become a restricted free agent in the summer once the Timberwolves offer him a qualifying offer worth $3.9 million. The 23-year-old averaged 20.7 points in 14 games with Minnesota after his trade from the Denver Nuggets. He also shot 42.6 percent from beyond the arc.

As a restricted free agent, Beasley can sign an offer sheet with another team, and then the Timberwolves would have 48 hours to match it or let the swingman walk. All signs point toward Minnesota keeping Beasley since he's the perfect small forward to pair next to Russell and Towns.

Beasley has career NBA averages of 8.2 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.0 assist. Minnesota would be wise to lock him up early in free agency and not let him even get to the point of taking meetings with rival teams.

2. Fire Ryan Saunders

Saunders has gone 36-70 since taking over for Tom Thibodeau. Although he hasn't coached a full 82-game season, the Wolves need someone with head coaching experience and a guy who is going to challenge his players every day.

Ryan is the son of the late Flip Saunders, the best coach in Timberwolves franchise history. It was a great story when Ryan got the job last season and won his first game in Oklahoma City.

However, now that the team has two All-Stars and a new president, it's time for Minnesota to shake things up and bring in a veteran coach who will help build and lead a more disciplined team on the court.

3. Hire Kenny Atkinson

Russell made his lone All-Star appearance during the 2018-19 season when he was on the Brooklyn Nets. Atkinson just so happened to be his head coach.

The Nets sent shockwaves throughout the league when they fired Atkinson, although reports have said it was a mutual separation. The Timberwolves need to fire Saunders and hire Atkinson as soon as the 2020 offseason begins. Kenny is elite at player development and already has a fantastic rapport with Russell.

Atkinson supposedly wasn't a fan of coaching Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant in Brooklyn. In Minnesota, he wouldn't have any superstar egos to deal with. Russell and Towns are All-Stars, not superstars, and both guys are certainly more than willing to listen and learn after having just one playoff win in their respective careers.

The Timberwolves should be building their roster around Towns, Russell, Beasley, Jarrett Culver and Josh Okogie. Atkinson feels like the perfect guy to develop that core into winners.
