Another year for Bayern Munich, another title in the German league. Winning the Bundesliga must have become a boring event for the Bavarians. What could concern them, however, is their quarterfinals exit against Villarreal in the Champions League. Thus, while Bayern Munich will be happy with their 10th Bundesliga title in a row, their board will be looking to change the roster and attack the Champions League. To help them restructure the club, here are three players Bayern Munich must move on from this summer.

Players Bayern Munich must move on from this summer

Robert Lewandowski

A couple of weeks back, we could say that this might never happen and the Polish striker would remain in Bayern Munich until he retires. However, the veteran expressed his desire to leave and it would be a smart move for the Bavarians to sell him this summer. His contract is up next season and then they would lose him for free. Also, a whole season of a clearly unhappy player would be bad for all sides. It is unclear how much Bayern could get for their legendary striker, but any number would be higher than nothing they would be getting for him next summer. With David Alaba leaving for free last summer, Bayern Munich would likely be careful for that not to happen again.

Even if he was not clearly unhappy, it might be the best move for them generally to move on from Lewa this summer. Bayern Munich is a club that relies a lot on their reputation and part of that is having players that really want to be there. It is absolutely clear to everyone involved that Lewandowski is too unhappy in Munich for that relationship to be mended. It will be hard to move on from a player that scored 40 or more goals in his last seven seasons, but nothing lasts forever. Thus, Lewandowski should be the first name on the list for departures this summer.

Serge Gnabry

Now, this might seem even weirder than the Lewandowski deal. Gnabry is just 26 and he could be a huge player in the future. However, he is out of contract this season and he has been hesitant to sign a new one up until now. There is a chance that Bayern Munich lose the German on a free transfer and while it might sound counterproductive, it might not be the worst situation for them to lose him. For that to be understood in the proper context, we have to understand a few things about how Bayern Munich operates. They are a huge club, not only in German terms but in terms of the entire footballing world. The way they got there was by having committed players and a smart dynamic inside the club.

Having a player that is so hesitant to sign a new deal might create issues for the rest of the roster. Gnabry is not the only young star on the squad and others might get ideas about their future contract extensions if Bayern Munich were to cave in this instance to all of the demands of the former Gunner. As counterintuitive as it might sound, losing Gnabry on a free could be a much better long-term solution than giving any strength to players that want to strongarm the Bayern Munich board. In other terms, they should make an example of Gnabry by showing all the players in the squad that they should only remain in Bayern Munich if they want to be there.

Corentin Tolisso

To a lot of casual football fans, it would sound weird that Tolisso was, for a brief period of time, the record-transfer signing of both Bayern Munich and Bundesliga. The Frenchman arrived in 2017 from Lyon for around €41 million, a fee that would likely bring you a somewhat talented youngster nowadays. Bayern broke their record fee three more times since then, but it will always be remembered that Tolisso was the record-holder for a while. Unfortunately, it seems like that will be the only thing he will be remembered for in the Bayern Munich jersey. As said with Lewandowski above, the best ability is availability, and Tolisso is just not available for Bayern enough.

Overall, he has played 72 league games in five seasons, which is an average of just over 14 games. In a league that plays 34 matchdays each season, being available for just under half each year is not good enough. Tolisso should look to return to France or try to find a club where he could revive his career. On the other hand, in terms of Bayern Munich, they have options to play in the middle. Tolisso, as unfortunate as his injury situation is, is just taking up space that could be better utilized by some youngsters like Jamal Musiala, or even a new signing like Ryan Gravenberch from Ajax.
