The Washington Commanders are in the market for a new quarterback. Per the words of general manager Martin Mayhew, the franchise has “spoken to every team that has a quarterback available” over the last few days. That means that they have likely talked to the Green Bay Packers about Aaron Rodgers and the Seattle Seahawks about Russell Wilson. These two have been the most popular names when discussing offseason rumors, though it seems more and more likely that both will return to their longtime homes.
That would leave the Commanders with some less appealing QB options to choose from, especially if Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson's legal issues don't come with a resolution soon enough. There is, however, one option out there who would be a perfect fit for the Commanders: San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Garoppolo is being ushered out of San Francisco with young signal-caller Trey Lance seemingly being handed the keys to the franchise. The 49ers recently revealed that Garoppolo underwent shoulder surgery that will sideline him until the summer. However, it isn't expected to affect his trade value, though it could still make teams a bit leery, which could work in the Commanders' favor.

3. Garoppolo likely won't cost the Commanders as much in a trade
The price tag to potentially acquire Rodgers, Wilson or Watson would be astronomical if they hit the trade block. The first two are Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks and the latter one is a surefire franchise guy—teams would be getting what they pay for. However, it's almost not worth it to mortgage the future, especially in the NFL, where draft picks carry more value than perhaps any other league. Garoppolo is solid enough, would be an upgrade for the Commanders, and wouldn't require them to give up an arm and a leg to acquire.
2. Garoppolo is a winner
Aside from Rodgers and Wilson, Garoppolo is the only quarterback potentially available who has been to the Super Bowl. That often gets overlooked. He has been criticized for his play, which admittedly, is lackluster sometimes. However, it's hard to argue with a 33-14 career regular season record along with five victories in the postseason. The Commanders would be putting themselves in a better position to win the NFC East by trading for Garoppolo.
1. Garoppolo would be a big upgrade
Commanders head coach Ron Rivera spoke to reporters at the NFL Combine and revealed that he thinks the team “needs a veteran” at quarterback. Garoppolo has had one season cut short due to injury, but in two full years as a starter, he has made it to the Super Bowl in one year and the NFC Championship game in the other. He has thrown for 20-plus scores in each of those years while completing over 67% of his passes in each season with the 49ers. Garoppolo would not only be a big upgrade, but he is exactly what the Commanders are looking for in their next signal-caller.
