The San Francisco 49ers had the 262nd and final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, so they had the honor of bestowing the title of “Mr. Irrelevant” on a player this year. That player wound up being Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy.

The newest 49ers quarterback had the right outlook on being the last player taken in the draft, per ESPN's Nick Wagoner:

“I think it's a funny thing,” Purdy said. “If you're a fan, or even my family, friends and stuff, it's funny to laugh about it and joke around with it. For me, I'm looking at it as an opportunity. I got my foot in the door, a team believed in me and now I get my opportunity to go and play football. That's what I want my career to be. That's what I want my job to be is to be an NFL quarterback and now I have the opportunity to do so. That's how I'm looking at it.

“From the outside looking in, I guess it's a funny thing and I'll embrace the role and have some fun with it for sure, but at the end of the day I'm trying to go and help a team win the Super Bowl. That's where my mindset is at with it.”

Purdy joins a crowded 49ers quarterback room that also includes Trey Lance, Jimmy Garoppolo and Nate Sudfeld. Of course, San Francisco has been trying to trade Garoppolo for a while now, and the expectation is still that the veteran will be moved. That would leave Purdy as the third-string quarterback. Before he really gets to work with the 49ers, Purdy gets to take part in “Irrelevant Week” in California in June.

Purdy was a four-year starter at Iowa State, ending his college career with 12,170 passing yards, 81 touchdowns and 33 interceptions in 46 starts. He also rushed for 1,177 yards and 19 touchdowns with the Cyclones.
