Despite the presence of veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who has already led the team to the NFC Championship and an appearance in Super Bowl LIV, the San Francisco 49ers infamously elected to select former North Dakota State Bison quarterback Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

However, general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan continue to insist that Lance will learn behind Garoppolo to begin the upcoming 2021 campaign even with the former already looking pretty solid this summer.

On the other hand, it was finally Jimmy G's turn to speak about about the quarterback situation in San Francisco.

“Training camp you’re worried about a lot of things, you can’t start worrying about that stuff,” Garoppolo told reporters on Tuesday, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “I think offensively we’ve been playing well, I’m pretty happy with where we’re at. Trey, he’s been making some plays. Like all of us, we have a long way to go so we’re just getting started here in camp and we will keep things rolling.”

It is also worth noting, though, that Garoppolo was quite complimentary of Lance later on in the conversation. The veteran signal-caller believes the rookie quarterback is pushing the entire group to be better due to his athleticism.

“The athleticism he brings,” Garoppolo added. “Me, Josh [Rosen] and Nate [Sudfeld] were kind of joking about it. It pushes us to be better athletes in a way. It’s a different style, so it’s kind of pick your flavor.”

Since leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl just a few seasons ago, Jimmy Garoppolo has been hampered by injuries that have cost him extensive periods of time. Although he no doubt still has something left in the tank heading into 2021, the 49ers are obviously not taking any chances in preparing for both the present and future with the presence of Trey Lance.
