The San Francisco 49ers defense might have taken an enormous blow on Sunday against the New York Jets. Second-year star edge-rusher Nick Bosa had to be carted off the field after suffering an apparent lower-body injury.
The Niners lost yet another edge-rusher shortly thereafter, with Solomon Thomas leaving due to injury. San Francisco was already without star defensive lineman Dee Ford.
Nick Bosa would be a major loss for the Niners, depending on the severity of the injury.
The former Ohio State star established himself as one of the best edge-rushers in football in his rookie season, finishing the 2019 campaign with 9.0 sacks, 16 tackles for a loss and 25 quarterback hits. Bosa's tremendous rookie season resulted in him being named the Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Bosa also made an impact during San Francisco's loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1. He failed to record a sack, but still finished the game with six combined tackles and a forced fumble.
San Francisco was relying on its depth on the defensive line when it decided to trade defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts in the offseason. But things are looking shakier in the front seven with Ford out and Nick Bosa's status now an unknown.
The Niners led the Jets early after an 80-yard touchdown run from Raheem Mostert on the first play of scrimmage. However, Bosa's injury could put a major damper on today's contest.
San Francisco entered the season with Super Bowl expectations. Those expectations could take a major hit if Bosa is on the shelf for the foreseeable future.
