San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster has been suspended for two games for violation of the team’s conduct and substance abuse policies, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Foster was arrested in Alabama for marijuana possession in January. He also pleaded no contest to the charge of possessing an assault weapon last month.

Foster also faced felony domestic violence charges put forth by a former girlfriend. However, those charges were subsequently dropped after the accuser revealed that she lied about her serious claims about Foster.

With his two-game ban, Foster will miss the Niners’ games against the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions.

In a statement released on the team's official website, Foster has apologized for his offenses which led to his suspension:

“I accept the League’s decision and am sorry that my mistakes have hurt my team. I have a responsibility to the 49ers, our fans and our community, and I am committed to learning from this situation and making better choices in the future. The support I have received over the last five months has been humbling, and I do not take it for granted.”

Foster was the 31st overall pick by the 49ers in the 2017 NFL Draft. He appeared in just 10 games during his rookie campaign in large part due to an ankle injury. Nevertheless, he still made a significant impact as he took over as the starting middle linebacker for NaVorro Bowman. He finished with 72 tackles in his 10 games.

With Foster suspended for the first two games, the likes of Brock Coyle and Korey Toomer are in line to fill in at middle linebacker. Coyle played all 16 games for the 49ers last season and made 10 starts. Meanwhile, Toomer also got starts for the Los Angeles Chargers over the last two seasons.

Despite his suspension, Foster is still eligible to participate in all of the team's preseason practices and games.
