49ers gauged interest on Jadeveon Clowney
Rumors surfaced that the San Francisco 49ers were a team that could be in pursuit of Jadeveon Clowney. Even though it’s highly unlikely that the 49ers sign him, San Francisco has gauged interest on Clowney, per a source that spoke to Sports Illustrated’s Leo Luna.
The reports of the 49ers reaching out to Clowney first broke out from a Twitter account named “ThePick6com.” Luna from Sports Illustrated reached out to one of his sources to confirm the news. While the news was confirmed by his source, his source pointed out that it was just San Francisco doing their due diligence.
“I don’t believe there was an offer exchanged or anything, seems like it was just gauging interest,” Luna noted.
A season ago with the Seattle Seahawks, Clowney finished with three sacks, four forced fumbles, and a defensive touchdown. His three sacks were the lowest mark of his career in a season where he started in nine or more games.
After spending the 2019 season with the Seahawks, Clowney decided to test free agency this offseason. As a result of his steep asking price, Clowney didn’t receive the offers he anticipated in free agency. Given his situation, Clowney could decide to sign with a team on a one-year deal and get another chance in free agency in 2021.
For the 49ers, signing Clowney seems like a pipe dream, especially with the team focused on signing George Kittle to an extension. John Lynch, San Francisco’s GM, reasoned that Kittle’s extension was the reason why the franchise didn’t pursue Jamal Adams via trade.
He’d likely give a similar reason as to why the team won’t sign Clowney. Still, it’s scary to think about what a pass rush of Nick Bosa, Dee Ford, Arik Armstead, and Clowney would look like.
