The hits keep on coming for the San Francisco 49ers — especially on defense. The defending NFC champions have seen more significant injuries to top players than any team in the league so far in 2020, and they suffered another blow with the news that defensive end Ziggy Ansah tore his biceps, which will likely require season-ending surgery.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that Ansah tore his bicep after the short-handed Niners lost to the Philadelphia Eagles, 25-20, on Sunday Night Football. The defensive end was ruled out at halftime with an arm injury and did not return to the 49ers sideline for the second half. His head coach said injured reserve was a likely landing spot for Ansah:

“That's what it sounded like,” coach Kyle Shanahan said about Ansah ending up on IR. “Everything that I've heard in there sounds like that's gonna happen. Pretty sure we'll confirm that tomorrow but that's what it sounded like.”

Ansah is scheduled to have an MRI on Monday to confirm the unfortunate diagnosis. He would become the third 49ers edge rusher to hit injured reserve in three weeks. In Week 2 against the New York Jets on the dangerous MetLife Stadium field, Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas both suffered torn ACLs on the same drive.

Another Niners veteran pass rusher, Dee Ford, was placed on short-term IR on Saturday due to a back injury. There is no clear timetable for his return.

The Niners signed Ansah on Sept. 21 to compensate for the injuries on the defensive line.

Ansah, 31, made the Pro Bowl with the Detroit Lions in 2015, but has had issues staying healthy in the years since. He's played just 20 games over the past three seasons. He registered no stats for the 49ers, mostly playing on third-down passing situations.

San Francisco fell to 2-2 on the season after the Eagles loss.
