Although The Last Of Us concluded its first season a couple of weeks ago, the impact it left amongst viewers is still strong up to this day. And while the cool details that hide beneath the surface make the viewing experience much better, it's the big moments that definitely left everyone's jaws on the floor. We take a look below at the best WTF moments HBO's hit series gave us during the show's 9-episode run.

5 WTF moments from The Last Of Us that left everyone stunned

The Last Of Us, HBO, Entertainment

5. Tess' sacrifice

Two episodes into the series and viewers have finally established that out of Tess and Joel, it's the latter who can be more caring and relatable to Ellie. Even the young girl knows this as Joel treats her as a job he has to complete in the fastest time possible. That's why it's such a punch to the gut when it was revealed Tess was bitten by an infected individual during their perilous journey to find the Fireflies in Massachusetts.

With time running out and a horde of infected coming their way, Joel has to decide fast on how to save the only relationship that mattered after her daughter was accidentally killed on Outbreak Day. Tess does that job for him by telling the two that she'll buy them time to escape. With Joel and Ellie out of harm's way, Tess goes on to confront the infected and blast them all the way to kingdom come. But even with her heroic act, it still doesn't make the weight of her loss any lighter as The Last Of Us season 1 went along.

4. Sam succumbing to Cordyceps

Thanks to Kathleen's forces taking control of Kansas City, Joel, and Ellie are forced to evade her local militia so they can make their way to Tommy's location without any trouble at all. Unfortunately, they get caught up when the pair kill several of Kathleen's men in self-defense while getting tangled up with Henry and Sam, the former of which helped FEDRA kill Kathleen's brother. This development led the four to band together to escape Kansas City without getting noticed by Kathleen.

But things won't go as planned as Kathleen's forces catch up with the four and a massive group of infected make short work of everyone shortly after. This leads Sam to turn the following day, thanks to a bite he got the night before. With the young boy about to take Ellie out, Henry makes the hard choice to shoot his brother before eventually killing himself. The quick progression of this scene takes everyone by surprise as the sheer amount of violence that took away Henry and Sam's life left viewers shocked. Without a doubt, this is one moment that made everyone understand how hard the world of The Last Of Us can be on ordinary people.

3. Riley and Ellie's time at the mall

Speaking of ordinary people, Ellie is the exact opposite of what can be deemed typical or normal, even in a setting such as The Last Of Us. But during the course of several episodes, there have been several instances when the young girl mentioned her life before being taken by the Fireflies to Joel. This can be fully seen in episode 7 when Riley takes Ellie out for her first mall experience.

The thing is, what should have been an extraordinary time for these girls turned into an absolute tragedy as a lone infected individual came out of nowhere. Just as the two were starting to open up about their feelings and making plans to stay in Boston, Ellie and Riley fend off the infected with both of them sustaining a bite. This leads to a very tense moment between the friends as they decide to spend their remaining time together before fully turning.

What's disconcerting about it is the abrupt end, which left viewers to imagine what Ellie did the moment Riley turned since she's immune to the infection. In a way, what the young girl did to her best friend is reason enough to lose sleep at night due to the sudden turn of what should be a sweet moment into a scary one.

2. David's town

Those who aren't familiar with the video game must have expected something dastardly with David and his followers the moment they appeared in episode 8. While that expectation turned out to be true, the revelation that he and a few of his followers cut up their own people in order to provide sustenance to the others was more than enough to freak viewers out.

After Ellie was taken by David's men, we see him interrogate the young girl inside the very place they chop people up. Add the scene when one of David's lackeys gives those in the kitchen a tray of meat to prepare, which looks suspicious enough, and the final fight between David and Ellie, one where the former tried to rape her, and viewers will vomit their souls out with all the morbid stuff happening in that particular town. It also doesn't help that David's approach to young girls is very creepy, teasing the fact that his evil goes beyond killing people and eating them up.

1. Sarah's death

While the previous entries certainly left viewers stunned, the first episode's prologue left more of a stronger impact due to its realism and how it tremendously changed Joel's life for the worse. After surviving an initial attack by their infected neighbors, Tommy and Joel were successful in evading the crowd to find a safe passage out of their predicament. Unfortunately, a lone soldier and his superior's orders took Sarah's life away as Joel clutches his daughter in a very moving act of desperation.

That tragedy set the tone for the HBO series and gave viewers an expectation that with every twist and turn, there'll be a lot of tension and conflict for the entire first season. With these moments, it's safe to say that The Last Of Us season 2 will still have these shocking scenes when it premieres in the future. In any case, the standard set for season 1 will be enough to be excited for the follow-up when it comes out.
