The New Orleans Pelicans had no choice but to trade Anthony Davis once he requested a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers after seven seasons with the team. While he did only lead them to two playoff appearances and won only one series, did the Pelicans really get enough for Davis four years later? Or did the Lakers basically win this trade by a mile? Let's take a look.

The initial blockbuster deal in the summer of 2019 was shipping Anthony Davis to the Lakers in exchange for Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, Brandon Ingram, and three first-round picks. The picks also included in the deal were the fourth pick of the 2019 NBA draft, a 2021 first-round pick (Dyson Daniels), a pick swap in 2023, and an unprotected first-round pick in 2024, which the Pelicans can choose to defer to 2025.

The next deal the Pelicans made was trading the fourth pick (De'Andre Hunter), Solomon Hill, and the 57th pick (Jordan Bone) to the Atlanta Hawks for the eighth pick (Jaxson Hayes), the 17th pick (Nickeil Alexander-Walker), the 35th pick (Didi Louzada), and a protected 2020 first-round pick. The protected first-round pick in this scenario then turned out to be two second-round picks (2021 and 2022), which they used to draft Herb Jones.

So the next trade involving any of the players mentioned above wouldn't happen for two years. The first domino to fall was Lonzo Ball, who was involved in a sign-and-trade with the Chicago Bulls. In exchange for Ball, the Pelicans received Garrett Temple, Tomas Satoransky, as well as a 2024 second-round pick, and cash.

Finally, fast-forward to the 2022 trade deadline, Hart, along with Satoransky, Alexander-Walker, Louzada, two conditional second-round picks, and a protected 2022 first-round draft pick were shipped to the Portland Trail Blazers for CJ McCollum, Tony Snell, and Larry Nance Jr.

So if you had trouble keeping up with everything, here's how the Anthony Davis deal turned out in 2023:

Pelicans trade:

  • Anthony Davis
  • Solomon Hill
  • Jordan Bone
  • Protected 2022 first-round pick (now a top-four protected 2025 first-round pick from the Milwaukee Bucks)
  • A conditional second-round pick for 2026 and 2027

Pelicans receive:

  • Brandon Ingram
  • CJ McCollum
  • Jaxson Hayes
  • Garrett Temple
  • Larry Nance Jr
  • Dyson Daniels
  • Herb Jones
  • Lakers' 2024 unprotected first-round pick with the option to defer to 2025.
  • Bulls 2024 second-round pick
