Heading into Double or Nothing weekend, the world was Will Ospreay‘s oyster, with the “Billy Goat” the odds-on favorite to win the International Championship in a match with Roderick Strong and the potential for even more unique opportunities just around the bend in the lead-up to Forbidden Door and All In.
Would Ospreay bask in the glory of his first AEW Championship reign, accepting a much-earned vacation as he looks towards the future? Or would he use the opportunity to name a few dream matches he'd like to wrestle in the not-too-distant future, maybe for his belt, more maybe for another strap entirely like his newfound desire to become Owen Hart Champion and challenge Swerve Strickland at Wembley Stadium?
Well, in an interview with Justin Walker that dropped on the very same day as Double or Nothing, Ospreay shot his shot at one of the best to ever do it, declaring that he wants to work a match against Adam Copeland after years of being a fixture of the WWE system.
“I'd really like Adam Copeland just because he's transformed into a different animal, especially to what he was on the other channel. I don't think I've ever seen him like this before, once again, he's trying new stuff out and he's fitting in with our style,” Will Ospreay told Justin Walker via 411 Mania. “I do feel like AEW has a different style to what every other pro wrestling company does to where we actually put the sole focus on pro wrestling, the story is pro wrestling. It is about climbing the ranks, it is about being the best, and the fact that he's just taken to it. I just can't help but think, ‘What does that look like? What does Ospreay vs. Copeland look like?' I'm very much fascinated with that one.”
Now granted, did Ospreay maybe set his sights on the TNT Champion as a contingency plan if his match against Roderick Strong didn't go well? Sure, that's a possibility, but it's far more likely that Ospreay, like many other 1990s kids, grew up a fan of Edge and would like to test his mettle against one of the best performers of his generation before he hangs up the boots for good. If Copeland isn't out of action for too long after taking a brutal miscalculation during his cage match against Malakai Black, a program between the “Rated-R Superstar” and the “Aerial Assassin” would be very interesting to see.
Will Ospreay is expecting a more international workload.
After securing a massive win at Double or Nothing against Roderick Strong, Will Ospreay was riding high, doing the “CEO” dance on the way to his media scrum session to talk all things professional wrestling.
Asked by a reporter about his work schedule, which a certain “Game” questioned in the past, Ospreay let it be known that he made the right decision for his family, and no one can make him feel bad about that, especially when no one is currently on his level.
“I think about my family in every decision I ever make. My family is the most important aspect of my life, and yeah more time with my family was the main reason why I took this job but also becoming one of the best professional wrestlers on the planet,” Will Ospreay noted via SEScoops. “I think a lot of people want to look past that. They just think I'm not working as hard, but like if you can show me a wrestler that is working at the same level as I am…like, be my f**king guest bro. This is the one thing that I'm like, very stern upon and very happy to say.”
Speaking of his schedule, Ospreay also expects that to change moving forward, as now that he's won the International Championship, a whole new set of talents from around the professional wrestling world could come his way for a crack at the title.
“I'm opening the doors to any professional wrestler that is willing to step through the door and to try and take this championship off me because right now, for me this championship has the lineage of kind of like the workhorse title, right?” Ospreak asked. “That's kind of like what everyone wants to call it. When it's in my hands, this title is the best wrestling title in the world. And if you think that you are the best wrestler in the world, then I dare you to step through that door. I've got the keys to that forbidden door, and it's very hard to knock through it.”
Welp, there you go, folks; while Ospreay may not be working five shows a week on the house show circuit, he is expecting to keep his healthy workload alive both in AEW and beyond moving forward, working five-star matches against anyone who comes his way and taking his talents to other promotions that have worthy challengers who want to test their mettle against the best wrestler in the world.
