Alex Volkanovski and Brian Ortega had a tremendous fight at UFC 266. Back and forth action that almost saw both men get finished.

That was especially the case in the third round. There was some controversy there at the end when Brian Ortega was speaking with the doctor.

Alex Volkanovski wasn't happy that he was given more time. He isn't sure Ortega was fit to continue either.

“I thought he was broken after the third round,” Alex Volkanovski told reporters at the post-fight press conference for UFC 266 (transcription via MMAFighting). “The ref decided to give him a minute to ask him questions, he wasn’t answering them right — I’m telling you because I was looking — and he was, ‘Look this way,’ and he was looking completely the other way and ‘Do this, do that.’ He answered every question wrong and they waited until they answered [something] right and then, ‘Let’s get into it.’

“I was like, ‘What’s going on here?’ They gave him an extra minute and I was looking at his eyes and he literally couldn’t see what was going on. That’s it. It’s over. Then I go back in there, put pressure, and he’s firing back just like he was like nothing happened. He’s tough, he’s durable, and credit to him.”

Ortega's coaches picked him up at the end of the third round and placed him on the stool. Something that's not allowed.

Ortega also had trouble seeing the numbers referee Herb Dean was showing him with his fingers. The whole sequence was quite a mess.
