Warriors center Anderson Varejao will miss his first ever Olympics, which his home country of Brazil will host in Rio, due to an injury.

The Warriors released a statement on Wednesday about Varejao's condition:

“Warriors center Anderson Varejao was examined earlier this week by Dr. Robert Watkins at the Marina Spine Center in Marina Del Rey, CA, and was diagnosed with a small lower back disc herniation.  He is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, but will be forced to miss the 2016 Summer Olympics due to the injury.

“Varejao recently experienced back pain while participating with the Brazilian National Team and returned to California to be examined by Dr. Watkins, a renowned spine specialist.”

Although it is unknown how this injury occurred or when, Varejao is expected to be okay by the start of training camp.

Varejao was drafted 31st overall in 2004 by the Orlando Magic, but was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He played with the Cavs for 12 seasons, becoming a fan favorite despite being prone to injuries. He was traded this past February to the Portland Trail Blazers in a cap dump, but then was waived by the Blazers and signed by by the Golden State Warriors.
