Part of Ken's (Ryan Gosling) journey in Barbie is discovering the patriarchy in the real world. This did ruffle some feathers, particularly from men, but Baumbach — who co-wrote the film with Greta Gerwig — responded to those critics.

“I felt men could take it,” he told CBS News with a laugh. “I mean, t– come on.”

Despite any controversies, Barbie was a huge hit. In fact, it is the biggest hit of 2023, grossing over $1.4 billion at the box office. The film also broke several records during its theatrical run and could be a major player in the awards season.

The film follows the titular doll (played by Margot Robbie) as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery. This comes on the heels of the doll beginning to question her own mortality. She is joined by Ken on this magical quest.

Aside from Robbie and Gosling, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Emma Mackey, and Dua Lipa star as variants of Barbie. Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, and John Cena play Ken variants.

Additionally, America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Helen Mirren, Will Ferrell, and Michael Cera also star in the film.

Noah Baumbach and his real-life partner Greta Gerwig have worked on several films together. Gerwig has starred in several of his films including Frances Ha, Mistress America, and more recently, White Noise. Baumbach has also co-written films with the auteur Wes Andesron. He co-wrote The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and Fantastic Mr. Fox with Anderson.
