Greta Gerwig's Barbie film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling shattered projections and had a stellar opening weekend at the box office. The film broke a massive box office milestone along the way.

Across domestic and international markets, Barbie grossed $337 million worldwide. $155 million came from domestic ticket sales, including $22.3 million across Wednesday (the Barbie “Blowout Party” screenings) and Thursday.

On top of all that, Barbie's $155 million opening broke the all-time record for a domestic box office debut for a film with a female solo or co-directing the film. Previously, Captain Marvel ($153.4 million) and Frozen II ($130.2 million) had held that record, but neither had a woman directing the feature on their own. Barbie is only the second film ever to be directed solely by a woman and open to over $100 million — the other movie is Patti Jenkins' Wonder Woman ($103.2 million).

Barbie is Greta Gerwig's fourth feature film and the first since the 2019 Oscar-winning Little Women adaptation she did. The film follows “Stereotypical Barbie” (Margot Robbie) on a self-discovery journey. Along for the ride is Ken (Ryan Gosling). The film features a ton of A-listers playing variations of the main dolls including Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa, Simu Liu, Kinglsey Ben-Adir, and John Cena. Will Ferrell, Rhea Perlman, Michael Cera, America Ferrerea, Ariana Greenblatt, and Hellen Mirren play other roles in the film.

Opening alongside Gerwig's film was Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer — which also broke some records. The double feature became a pop culture phenomenon dubbed “Barbenheimer.”

Barbie is in theaters now.
