The Chicago Bears are going to be immortalizing two franchise icons soon, Walter Payton and George Halas. The team announced today that they'd be building statues of those two legends outside Soldier Field, per Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.com.

The statues will be displayed on Tuesday, September 3rd just a couple of days before the Bears kickoff the NFL season with a game against the Green Bay Packers. That game is going to have a ton of significance, as it's kicking off the NFL's 100th season. It's also the Bears' 100th season, and clearly, they wanted to do something special.

“It is only appropriate that the father of professional football and the greatest player in the history of the game are being honored in this way, and perhaps no better time for the unveiling than as we kick off our centennial season,” Bears chairman George H. McCaskey said in a statement.

“Thank you to the Chicago Park District, Soldier Field and SMG for their support throughout the process, and to sculptor Chad Fisher for his artistry in bringing his subjects to life,” he wrote.

Payton, of course, is one of the best running backs in league history who spent his entire career with Chicago. Halas made an incredible impact on the game, playing for the Bears, owning the Bears, and coaching the Bears for decades.

“I know Walter would be humbled to have this honor bestowed upon him, just as Jarrett, Brittney and our entire family are,” said Payton's widow Connie. “To say that I am enthusiastic about unveiling this statue to the city of Chicago is an understatement. What a proud moment for all of us and the city of Chicago. We’re not just Chicago Bears fans, we’re family.”
