The Chicago Bears are expected to take a big step this season, and Caleb Williams is the reason why. The Bears drafted Williams with the first pick in the NFL Draft, and he is expected to be a star in the pros. Williams played at Oklahoma and USC in college, and he won the Heisman Trophy after the 2022 season. He was the best player in college football, and Bears fans are thrilled to have him.

Chris Simms knows what it is like to be a quarterback in the NFL, and he recently shared his thoughts on Caleb Williams. He is all aboard the Williams hype train.

“I look at him as being a natural, being a ‘Chosen One’ type of guy,” Chris Simms said on his podcast, Unbuttoned. “He’s been in an offense in his college career where it was on his shoulders and he was asked to read the field and check and do things at the line of scrimmage. He’s very mature for a quarterback, as far as the play is concerned.”

Simms knows that there might be some early hiccups, but he is expecting Williams to have a big year during his rookie season.

“His physical talent is extraordinary. Extraordinary. I also think he has the mentality and the maturity to handle Chicago and handle the new offensive situation,” Simms said. “I know it might not be perfect in Week 1 or 2, but I’m betting more in Week 5 or 6 that– like we saw with C.J. Stroud last year– we’re going to be going ‘Holy crap, Caleb Williams.’”

Chris Simms has confidence in former Bears QB Justin Fields

The reason why the Bears picked up Caleb Williams is because things didn't work out with Justin Fields. There was a time when people didn't know whether or not Chicago was going to get rid of Fields. There were Bears fans that wanted them to trade the first overall pick and keep him. That didn't happen, but Chris Simms still thinks that Fields can find success with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“He’s the greatest athlete at quarterback in the NFL right now,” Simms said of Fields. “That’s the No. 1 headline. There is nobody that can move and run like Justin Fields. I love his grit, his toughness, his lay it on the line-ness to win a football game. It kinda permeates off the film when you watch it. I will never question Justin Fields’ will to win a game.”

Fields is very athletic, Simms is right about that, but he does need to improve as a pocket passer. He thinks that he got better during his time in Chicago, but it still has to be better for him to be successful.

“But it’s still not where you would like it, bottom line…,” Simms said. “He’s still being managed, and within the pocket he still plays at what I would call an average level compared to what we expect out of big-time starting NFL quarterbacks. So there’s still more work there that needs to be done.”

Both Caleb Williams and Justin Fields are going to be exciting players to watch next season. Williams is going to be the guy for the Bears, and Fields is fighting for the starting job with Russell Wilson. There are a lot of intriguing storylines around both QBs.
