The Cincinnati Bengals have fired first-year defensive coordinator Teryl Austin after just nine games with the team, Josina Anderson of ESPN reports.

Austin’s firing comes on the heels of yet another disastrous performance by the Bengals defense on Sunday as they allowed 51 points and 509 total yards in a loss to the New Orleans Saints. The Bengals also allowed 500+ yards in their previous two games against the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Bengals have become the first team in the Super Bowl era to give up 500 or more yards in three straight games.

The Bengals defense under Austin was down in 31st in scoring defense, allowing 32 points per game and dead-last by a wide margin in yards allowed at 454 per game.

Prior to being hired by the Bengals, Austin spent the past four seasons as the defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions. He was also the secondary coach for the Baltimore Ravens’ 2012 Super Bowl-winning team.

At 5-4, the Bengals are still very much in the wild-card playoff race in the AFC. But their defense will now have to regroup with a different coordinator for the remainder of the season. Their next assignment will be against their division rivals, the Baltimore Ravens.
