Giovani Bernard says Bengals ‘buying in’ to Zac Taylor
Add Giovani Bernard to the list of Cincinnati Bengals players who like the vibe under new head coach Zac Taylor.
Wide receivers A.J. Green and John Ross have already expressed admiration for the work Taylor has done since taking charge in Cincinnati. And now Bernard has echoed that sentiment, saying he believes the entire team is buying into the new offense.
“Just getting accustomed to the new playbook and accustomed to the change,” Bernard said, via the team’s website. “Everybody is really trying to understand how Coach Taylor wants this team to be ran. I think everybody is really buying in. Obviously right now it’s just trying to pick up the X’s and O’s as time gets rolling we’ll understand it a bit more and be ready for Week One.”
Bernard will be hoping to have a much bigger role in Taylor’s offense than he did last year under head coach Marvin Lewis and offensive coordinator Bill Lazor. The 27-year-old set career-lows in terms of rushing attempts (56), rushing yards (211), receptions (48) and receiving yards (218) despite playing 12 games.
While Joe Mixon will likely continue to be the Bengals’ primary back moving forward, Bernard could still be a capable weapon, particularly in the receiving game, if he gets the chance to get significant touches on offense.
The Bengals already have a promising receiving corps in A.J. Green, Tyler Boyd, and Ross. And if Taylor can get the most out of Mixon and Bernard in the backfield, the Bengals offense has the potential to break out in a big way this season.
