Days after C.J. Uzomah elected to take his talents to the New York Jets, the Cincinnati Bengals have bolstered their tight end depth with a key signing.

As noted by Hurst’s agency, EnterSports Management, the fourth-year tight end has come to terms with the Bengals on a one-year deal.

Hurst featured for the Atlanta Falcons over the past two seasons. He was a regular in the Matt Ryan-led Falcons offense in the 2020 campaign, where he played in all 16 regular season games and hauled in 56 receptions for 571 receiving yards.

As the Falcons opted to select former Florida Gators tight end Kyle Pitts in the opening round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Hurst saw a decrease in snaps played this past year. He wound up playing in 39 percent of snaps on offense in the season, while the rookie tight end emerged as a focal point for the team with 73.6 percent of snaps played.

As a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Falcons had a chance to keep Hurst for the 2022 campaign via his fifth-year option. However, they declined this option last May, which then made him an unrestricted free agent earlier this week.

Hurst is expected to compete with third-year talent Drew Sample to be the Bengals’ go-to starter at the tight end position. Sample has recorded 56 receptions over his ongoing run so far in Cincinnati.
