It was entirely logical to think that entering this tournament, Louisville would not be highly motivated. ACC Tournament odds analysts knew that over the previous month, the Cardinals lost three different games by more than 20 points. They won only once since the start of February and were decisively beaten in their last home game of the season by Virginia this past Saturday. Yet, if you are contemplating a Louisville Virginia pick, you have to admit that Louisville came out firing in the first round of the ACC Tournament on Tuesday, scoring 45 first-half points and building a lead of over 20 before holding off Georgia Tech to advance to this second-round game.
Louisville clearly has some life left and wants to see if it can make a surprising push in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center, where the 2022 ACC Tournament is being held. Louisville has an open head coaching position. The Cardinals badly need to get this hire right, but in the meantime, this roster has managed to prolong its season by at least one more game.
Virginia would need to make the ACC Tournament final to have any slight hope of an at-large bid. The Cavaliers are almost certainly headed for the NIT after a very inconsistent season and some brutal late losses to James Madison, Florida State, and Duke. Virginia also got blown out at home by Clemson and lost to a below-average North Carolina State team. Virginia simply lacks the talent and — in particular — the shooting of the elite UVA teams of previous seasons. Tony Bennett still knows how to coach, but he fell into a rut with recruiting and has been punished in this particular season by a down cycle. Keep that in mind when considering a Louisville Virginia pick.
Virginia did just beat Louisville, 71-61, this past Saturday, in a game the Cavaliers led by nearly 20 points before UL made a late rally and created a moderately more interesting second half. Virginia has beaten Louisville by double-digit margins — 12 in the first meeting, 10 in this more recent one — in 2022.

Why Louisville Could Cover the Spread
The Cardinals showed against Georgia Tech that they don't want their season to end. That's not something everyone assumed to be the case a week ago. They have already lost twice to Virginia and might put up a better fight this time.
Why Virginia Could Cover the Spread
The Cavaliers have had Louisville's number since Louisville moved from the Big East to the ACC. This is one of the worst Louisville teams in recent memory. Virginia is a flawed team, but Louisville is a great matchup for the Cavaliers.
Final Louisville-Virginia Prediction & Pick
It simply makes good common sense to trust Virginia when the Hoos play Louisville. Virginia has the better team and the better coach in a favorable matchup.
