An AL West showdown will soon kick off the weekend when the Los Angeles Angels take on the Seattle Mariners. Join us for our MLB odds series where our Angels-Mariners prediction and pick will be revealed.

Losers in four of their last five games, the Angels are desperate to make a return to the win column. As it stands, LA possesses a 21-34 record on the young season and are already nine games behind the first-place Mariners. Nonetheless, Los Angeles will attempt to gain some positive momentum in this one when they send out RHP Jose Soriano who is 2-5 with a not too shabby 3.61 ERA on the season.

On the other side of things, the Mariners are currently in the driver's seat of the AL West despite only a 31-27 record under their belts. Regardless, Seattle is benefitting off of a down year from the division as a whole and are up 3.5 games on the defending champion Texas Rangers.

Overall, the Mariners are in the midst of a hot-streak with four victories in their past five games. Last time out on the diamond, Seattle was blanked by the Houston Astros and will certainly be seeking to get back on track.

Why The Angels Will Cover The Spread/Win

Article Continues Below

For starters, the best chance that the Angels have at covering the spread as the road ball club will require a phenomenal effort from the bats. At first glance, this is an area of their game where the ‘Halos struggle in. Although their 235 runs scored combined ranks as the 17th-best mark in the majors, they only end up reaching base .304 percent of the time which is far below the league average.

In addition, Los Angeles ranks smack dab in the middle-of-the-pack in batting average with a .244 mark. At the end of the day, this is not a unit that is going to knock your socks off, but they will need to produce worthy at-bats to put pressure on an outstanding Seattle pitching staff. Above all else, the biggest question for the Angels will be whether or not they can go toe-to-toe with Seattle's.

Tasked with the responsibility of making this a game will be Soriano. Believe it or not, but Soriano had his swing and miss stuff working early and often in his latest start as he struck out eight hitters en route to tossing six innings and allowing four runs. All together, Soriano has managed to surrender four runs or less in all nine starts this season. Could he be the reason that the Angels knock off their division rivals?

Why The Mariners Will Cover The Spread/Win

It hasn't always been pretty for the Mariners, but for the most part, they seem to be gelling at the most opportunistic of times. Not only have they been winning more often of late, but their pitching prowess has been impressive to say the least.

On paper, there are few teams around the league that can pitch as efficiently as the Mariners. Despite only having four starts under his belt, Bryan Woo is off to an exceptional start to his 2024 campaign. Having yet to be defeated, Woo serves as a tough nut to crack for opposing hitters. Until it is proven that he can be beaten consistently, the Mariners should win a majority of the games that Woo pitches in.

Offensively, much has been left to be desired, which was further illustrated in getting shutout by the Astros. But the Mariners aren't short of any talent by any means. If all else fails, keep tabs on names like Julio Rodriguez, Cal Raleigh, and Mitch Haniger to come through when inside the batter's box. Obviously, the name of Seattle's game is with their supreme pitching, but they will desperately need to bring their offense on Friday evening.

Final Angels-Mariners Prediction & Pick

Be on the lookout for a low-scoring affair between these two division rivals. Ultimately, the outcome of this contest may come down to which bullpen flexes their muscles in the later frames and whichever side can come up with some clutch hits in critical moments.

With that being said, take the Mariners to hand the Angels a loss in the first meeting of the season between the two clubs.
