The Seattle Mariners know they need to be better. They just lost three of four games to the Minnesota Twins. They haven't had a bad start to their season, but at 21-18, they haven't been especially good, either. Given that the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees have both gotten off to strong starts in the American League East, while three teams — the Kansas City Royals, Cleveland Guardians, and the aforementioned Twins — are all doing well in the American League Central, the competition for an A.L. wild card berth is stiff. The Texas Rangers are going to be tough for the Mariners to unseat in the American League West, so if the M's don't begin to play consistently strong baseball, they could find themselves in trouble at or near the All-Star break. The Mariners will want to be 10 games over .500 as soon as they realistically can, so that their margin for error in the second half of the season will be larger, not smaller.
Seattle needs to be able to fatten up against the Oakland A's. The Mariners have done really well versus Oakland in recent years, and even though the A's are a lot better than they were in 2023, the M's have to bring the hammer to an inferior opponent. Friday night, the Mariners got off to a good start in this weekend series with an 8-1 win. Seattle has to continue to punish Oakland and build a portfolio in which it dominates inferior teams. This will enable the Mariners to play .500 ball against good teams and not suffer in the standings over the course of a 162-game season.

Why The Athletics Could Cover The Spread
The A's are significantly better than last season. They are 18-22 through 40 games this season. Last year, Oakland was 9-31 in its first 40 games of the season. Oakland's bullpen is greatly improved. That is one of the central reasons the A's have been able to draw close to the .500 mark. If this game is close going into the eighth or ninth inning, Oakland closer Mason Miller is an elite stopper. He has been the single best relief pitcher in Major League Baseball through the first month and a half of the season. He regularly throws 100-mile-per-hour heat and has been close to untouchable. Seattle's batting order is inconsistent, giving Oakland's pitching staff a chance to keep this game close and cover for Oakland on the run line.

The Mariners are not a consistent team, but they have consistently worn out the A's over the past few seasons. Home games versus Oakland represent the Mariners' comfort zone. This has been a reliable baseball bet in recent years.
