The Oakland Athletics take on the Seattle Mariners. Our MLB odds series has our Athletics Mariners prediction and pick. Find out how to watch Athletics Mariners.
The Seattle Mariners have the pitching needed to become a playoff team and a contender in October. Few teams in Major League Baseball have been able to get such consistent performances from all five members of their starting rotation. The New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and Kansas City Royals stand out as three teams which are getting a lot of production from an assemblage of five starters. There might be one or two others in the mix, but the Mariners are at the head of the class in Major League Baseball through one and a half months of play. The ERA of their five starters is one of the best in the majors. Every day they give the ball to someone they can rely on and trust. This is a team which — with that level of pitching — should be well above .500 and heading for a season which will end at least 20 games above .500 (91-71) if not better.
Yet, through 40 games, the Mariners are only 21-19. They are fortunate that the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros aren't playing good baseball, either, but it remains that the Mariners have not taken advantage of their competitors' struggles. The Mariners lost to Oakland on Saturday night. Seattle wasted a strong start from Bryce Miller, who pitched six innings and allowed only two runs. The M's scored only one run against several Oakland pitchers. Seattle scratched out only three hits, a sign of a batting order which entered the season unlikely to perform at a high level and has lived down to the low expectations. Seattle obviously needs multiple high-impact bats before the trade deadline and will need to give up some pitching to beef up its offense. The Mariners can't continue to go on like this. Texas is bound to play better. Other American League teams have set a much higher standard. Seattle can't just continue to tread water, but that's what the M's are currently doing.

Why The Athletics Could Cover The Spread
The A's are a better pitching team this year compared to 2023. Look at what they did to Seattle on Saturday, holding the Mariners to just three hits. The A's have a lights-out bullpen which continues to get the job done. The Oakland bullpen threw four scoreless innings against Seattle on Saturday night in the Athletics' 8-1 win. A's relievers allowed just one hit and no walks in those four innings. Oakland is not giving away free outs and free bases the way it often did last season. This year's Oakland team isn't as sloppy or careless as the 2023 team, and that's really making a difference.
Seattle, as explained above, has a very weak offense. Oakland pitching can win this game, much as it did on Saturday.
Why The Mariners Could Cover The Spread
The Mariners are mediocre, but they very, very rarely lose a series to the A's, particularly in Seattle. They also very, very rarely lose back-to-back games versus Oakland.
Final Athletics-Mariners Prediction & Pick
Seattle lost to Oakland on Saturday, but the M's are not going to lose back-to-back games to the A's. Take Seattle.
Final Athletics-Mariners Prediction & Pick: Mariners -1.5
