Blue Jays-Guardians Projected Starters

Jose Berrios vs. Ben Lively

Jose Berrios (6-5) has a 3.13 ERA. He has had a few rocky outings, but Berrios has pitched like an ace for this Toronto staff in 2024. Berrios can be counted on to give the Jays at least six solid innings per start. He usually avoids the big inning and can pitch his way out of trouble when he doesn't have his very best stuff. He carries himself like an elite pitcher, and it is important to note that after he was pulled in the American League Wild Card Series against the Minnesota Twins last year, he could have lost faith in both himself and the Blue Jay organization. He frankly hasn't gotten a lot of run support this season, but he keeps taking the mound and giving Toronto a professional outing. The Jays are not a good team, but it is not easy to bet against Jose Berrios.

Last Start: Sunday, June 16 versus the Cleveland Guardians: 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 1 HR, 0 BB, 1 K

2024 Road Splits: 8 starts, 46 1/3 IP, 42 H, 20 R, 10 HR, 13 BB, 35 K

Ben Lively (6-3) has a 3.02 ERA. Lively has a lower ERA than Berrios, and Berrios has pitched like an ace this season. What does that tell you about Lively and how well he has performed? Lively is one of several reasons Cleveland has started its season so well and has established itself as the clear favorite in the American League Central Division. Lively struggled against Toronto this past Sunday, but even then, his ERA is low. That tells you how well he had been performing up to this past weekend. As you can see below, Lively has been spectacular in his home starts this season. He has barely made any mistakes in Cleveland, pitching with the level of consistency which has powered the Guardians to a surprisingly lofty place in the American League.

Last Start: Sunday, June 16 versus the Toronto Blue Jays: 4 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 HR, 3 BB, 4 K

2024 Home Splits: 4 starts, 23 1/3 IP, 20 H, 5 R, 2 HR, 4 BB, 23 K

Why The Blue Jays Will Cover The Spread/Win

When you look at the odds presented above, you will notice that the Jays could fetch a large plus-money price if they win by more than one run. With Jose Berrios on the bump, there's a very realistic chance that could happen. Also keep in mind that the Jays have lost four games in a row. They are due for a good game. This is a good bounce-back situation for them. Keep in mind that they figured out how to hit Ben Lively this past Sunday when they defeated the Guardians, which happens to be their most recent win. There are plenty of valid reasons to think the Jays will cover the spread.

Why The Guardians Will Cover The Spread/Win

Ben Lively struggled in Toronto on Sunday. Chances are he will pitch a lot better in Cleveland for this game. If that happens, the Guardians have an excellent chance of covering.

Final Blue Jays-Guardians Prediction & Pick

The Guardians are a better team and have a good home-field pitcher — Ben Lively — on the mound. Take Cleveland.
