Why The Diamondbacks Will Cover The Spread/Win
Article Continues BelowThe Diamondbacks are currently hanging around. Substantially, they came into the weekend embroiled in a tie with the San Diego Padres for the final wildcard spot in the National League. Their hitting has been one of the major reasons why they have hung around.
The Diamondbacks are sixth in batting average and on-base percentage. Additionally, they are fifth in runs and 11th in slugging percentage. But the power levels have been slightly down, as they rank 17th in home runs. Now, their hitters hope they can produce.
Corbin Carroll got off to a horrible start this season. Yet, he has slowly improved and is now hitting .217 with two home runs, 23 RBIs, and 43 runs. Carroll has 34 walks. However, he has only stolen 13 bases and needs to do more on the basepaths when he gets the chance. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is inconsistent. So far, he is hitting .256 with nine home runs, 42 RBIs, and 33 runs.
Christian Walker has displayed some power. Overall, he is batting .258 with 17 home runs, 50 RBIs, and 46 runs and looks well on his way to 35 home runs, 100 RBIs, and 95 runs if he stays healthy. Joc Pederson has stayed consistent. Ultimately, he is hitting .297 with nine home runs, 33 RBIs, and 27 runs.
The Diamondbacks have performed horribly on the mound. Unfortunately, they rank 26th in team ERA. The relievers have not done much better. Currently, they rank 21st in team ERA.
The Diamondbacks will cover the spread if they can prevent Wheeler from getting into a groove. Then, they need to avoid making mistakes against a dangerous lineup.
Why The Phillies Will Cover The Spread/Win
The Phillies are the best team in baseball right now. Part of that can attributed to an offense that is relentless at the plate and always a threat to drive runners across the plate.
The Phillies are fourth in batting average and runs. Furthermore, they are third in on-base percentage. Philadelphia also ranks seventh in home runs and slugging percentage. Now, they hope this dangerous lineup can continue pounding the baseball, and they have one of the best hitters in the game.
Bryce Haper is still among the greats. Currently, he is batting .285 with 17 home runs, 48 RBIs, and 45 runs. Trea Turner recently returned from a hamstring injury. Now, he entered the weekend hitting .340 with two home runs, nine RBIs, and 28 runs and will look to do more to help his team. Kyle Schwarber is still as powerful as ever. Significantly, he is batting .254 with 17 home runs, 48 RBIs, and 53 runs. Nick Castellanos has displayed power. Yet, he is only hitting .220 with nine home runs, 31 RBIs, and 37 runs.
The Phillies are the best team in baseball in pitching and rank first in pitching. Significantly, Wheeler has been a big part of that and is 6-3 with a 2.96 ERA over 11 career starts against the Diamondbacks in his career. The bullpen is also solid. Ultimately, they rank seventh in team ERA.
The Phillies will cover the spread if their lineup can pound the baseball. Then, Wheeler must bounce back and dominate.
Final Diamondbacks-Phillies Prediction & Pick
It is difficult to trust an inexperienced pitcher. Moreover, it is tough to bet against Wheeler. While he struggled in his last outing, it is rare for him to do badly in two starts in a row. Because of those factors, we expect him to come out with a vengeance. Consequently, there is also the revenge factor. The Diamondbacks prevented the Phillies from getting to the World Series. Subsequently, the Phillies will avenge that series loss and start this one on a high note.
