The New Mexico State Aggies have formed a dynasty — not on a national level, but certainly in the Western Athletic Conference, as March Madness odds experts know well. New Mexico State, in the college town of Las Cruces, has built a local empire in the WAC, winning 10 WAC Tournament championships since 2007 and winning eight of the last 10 WAC Tournaments, the latest one coming this year. Previous coach Marvin Menzies and current coach Chris Jans have teamed up to lift New Mexico State to a consistently high standard. This is worth noting when making a New Mexico State UConn prediction.
New Mexico State is not as powerful a program as it was just over 50 years ago. The Aggies made the 1970 Final Four under then-coach Lou Henson, a man who others might remember as the coach at the University of Illinois who made the 1989 Final Four with the Fighting Illini. Yet, while NMSU isn't a true Final Four threat, this consistent run of success in making the NCAA Tournament is rightly a point of immense pride in Las Cruces and the university community.
UConn hopes this 2022 NCAA Tournament will be like 2014. The Huskies were a No. 7 seed eight years ago, but they started the 2014 NCAA Tournament in Buffalo, very close to their campus in Storrs. UConn won those two games in Buffalo and then picked up momentum in the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, making the Final Four and then winning the national championship. The Huskies haven't made a deep March run since then, but now, with a No. 5 seed and an opening-weekend placement in Buffalo, UConn is hopeful that history will repeat itself. Coach Dan Hurley has done a very good job with this year's Husky team. UConn, after several years in the AAC, is back in the Big East, which is where fans of the program believe it always belonged. It never should have left the Big East. UConn is in a good place — figuratively — entering this game, but also in a good geographical place, in Buffalo. Keep that in mind when formulating a New Mexico State UConn pick.
