Why The Mariners Will Cover The Spread/Win
Gilbert is having a great season. He has an ERA just over 3.00, and his WHIP sits right at 1.00. He has a very good matchup in this game, as well. The Athletics have the third-worst batting average, and third-worst on-base percentage. The Athletics also have the highest chase percentage this season. Their zone contact percentage and chase contact percentage are both the lowest in the MLB, as well. Gilbert has a pretty high whiff percentage, and his chase percentage is not too bad, either. Expect him to have a big game on the mound Wednesday night.
The Mariners have to get a big enough lead so they do not have to see Mason Miller late in this game. They are facing a young pitcher with two rough starts this season. Seattle has to give him a third. The Mariners do not have the best bats, but put up 17 runs in their first three-game series with Oakland. If they can get their bats hot, the Mariners will be able to win this game and build their lead in the American League West Division.
Why The Athletics Will Cover The Spread/Win
Joey Estes is on the bump for the Athletics. As mentioned, Estes does have two rougher starts, but he has two good starts, as well. He is coming off a start in which he allowed just one earned run against the Tampa Bay Rays, as well. His other good start came against the Mariners. In that game, Estes threw five innings, allowed just one run on two hits, and struck out five. If Estes can have a similar start to that one, the Athletics will win this game.
The Mariners are struggling just as much as the Athletics are at the plate. Seattle has the second-worst batting average in the MLB, sixth-worst slugging percentage, and fourth-worst on-base percentage. The Mariners are also a team that will swing and miss, so Estes has that going for him, as well. He needs to carry his momentum into this game, but the Athletics have a great chance to win with him on the bump against a weaker offense.
Final Mariners-Athletics Prediction & Pick
I would not be surprised to see this game be lower scoring. The Mariners and Athletics both have struggling offenses, and both pitchers are capable of shutting down the opposing team. As for picking a winner, I like the Mariners to win this game. They have played some very good baseball lately, and I am fully expecting that to continue Wednesday night. I will be taking the Mariners to not only win this game, but cover the spread, as well.
