The Milwaukee Brewers will square off with the Philadelphia Phillies for the rubber match at Citizens Bank Park. It's time to continue our MLB odds series with a Brewers-Phillies prediction and pick.

The Brewers defeated the Phillies 5-3 on Saturday afternoon. Milwaukee fell behind early when Nick Castellanos smoked an RBI double  to give Philadelphia a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Later, Castellanos added a sacrifice fly in the third inning to make it 3-0 Phillies. The Brewers answered back with a momentum-changing fifth inning. Jace Peterson drove an RBI single to center that scored Hunter Renfroe. Next, Willy Adames plucked an RBI single to left-center to cut the deficit to 3-2.  Christian Yelich took his turn next with an RBI single to shallow right to drive in Peterson.

The Brewers then pulled off some trickery when Adames scored by stealing home plate after tricking the Phillies into attempting to throw Yelich out. Later, Renfroe added some run support with a blast to right-field for a home run in the sixth inning. It was his second homer of the season.

Adrian Houser tossed six innings while allowing three earned runs on five hits. The bullpen protected the lead efficiently as relievers Trevor Gott and Devin Williams got the ball to Josh Hader for the ninth inning save-opportunity. Thus, Hader closed the door on the ballgame with a 1-2-3 final inning. The Brewers are 9-6 and in second place in the NL Central. Meanwhile, the Phillies are 6-9 while sitting in fourth place in the NL East.

Why The Brewers Could Cover The Spread

Milwaukee will turn to Eric Lauer today. Lauer is 1-0 in 2022 with a 3.48 ERA. He tossed six innings allowing one earned run with five hits and five strikeouts in his last start. The Brewers hope he can replicate the effort as he takes the hill in the finale of a three-game series. Consequently, Lauer faced the Phillies twice last season. In the most recent start, he tossed seven shutout innings allowing four hits while striking out five. However, Lauer also faced the Phillies in an earlier start and struggled. He allowed eight runs, two earned, over six innings of work. Oddly enough, the starting pitcher opposite him for both games was Aaron Nola, who will take the hill today.

The Brewers need more out of their offense. They managed five runs on Saturday, one night after only scoring two. This begins with Yelich and Renfroe. Both produced effectively yesterday and will look to continue the momentum today. The bullpen pitched well, rebounding after a dismal effort in the opener where they blew a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning and lost the game.

The Brewers will cover the spread if Lauer can give them six or seven strong innings and contain the powerful Phillies' hitters. Additionally, their lineup must keep the ball rolling and give the bullpen enough room to work with. Lauer has to keep the ball in the yard as he surrendered three home runs against the Phillies last season.

Why The Phillies Could Cover The Spread

Philadelphia will go with Nola. He is 2-1 with a 5.52 ERA in 2022. Today, he faces a Brewers team that he took on twice in 2021. Nola also will once again face off opposite Lauer. He looks to put up results in front of the Philadelphia fanbase and give them a reason to go home happy.

However, Nola needs his teammates to pick up the pace. The Phillies have managed seven runs in this series. Also, they have yet to hit the ball out of the ballpark. Will this change in the finale? Bryce Harper could answer that question. He is 3 for 8 in the series against Milwaukee but remains stuck at two home runs. The Phillies need his bat to power up to give themselves the best chance of winning. Philadelphia struck early last night but succumbed to the big inning. Thus, the Phillies must keep their composure and also give themselves a lead early to sustain success.

The Phillies will cover the spread if Nola delivers a quality performance. Also, Harper must step up and showcase what he is worth. Lastly, the Phillies have to maintain a lead, and their bullpen needs to perform better to ensure success.

Final Brewers-Phillies Prediction & Pick

The Brewers and Phillies will meet in the Sunday night game of the week. This means it will be a cold 49-degree evening at Citizens Bank Park. Last night, the teams combined for eight runs. Both starting pitchers have dominated in recent history, and there is a feeling that it will continue. The under is the best bet to succeed here, as the Brewers and Phillies will search for runs all night long.

Final Brewers-Phillies Prediction & Pick: Under 8 (-118)
