Why the Dodgers Could Cover

The Dodgers will have a big gun on the mound for this all-important matchup, as they’ll be starting Julio Urias in Game 5 of the NLDS. Urias was the man who tamed the Giants’ offense in the Dodgers’ 9-2 win in Game 2. The 25-year-olds southpaw pitched for five innings in that game and surrendered just a run on only three hits while striking out five.

With that performance, he was able to extend the Dodgers’ unbeaten streak in games he’s started to 12 games, dating back to early August. Back in the regular season, Urias went 2-1 in three starts against the Giants, with that lone loss coming at Dodger Stadium. However, he went 2-0 with four earned allowed and 23 Ks in 17.1 total innings in two starts at Oracle Park in the regular season. Of course, that doesn’t take into account his Game 2 W. The Dodgers’ offense is being carried by the pair of Will Smith and Mookie Betts, who enter Game 5 with a 1.206 OPS and .864 OPS so far this postseason, respectively.

Why the Giants Could Cover

The Giants will counter Urias with Logan Webb, who will look to reprise his role in San Francisco’s 4-0 win in Game 1. Webb had a decent regular season in which he posted an 11-3 record and a 3.03 ERA to go with a 2.73 FIP and 2.80 xFIP, and he continued this success into Game 1 of this NLDS matchup. Webb dominated the Dodgers in the series opener, blanking them for 7.2 innings and striking out 10 while not even issuing a single walk in a 4-0 win.

It might be a tough ask for Webb to shut out the Dodgers again, but he might also benefit still from the ongoing slump of Trea Turner and Justin Turner. Trea is hitting just .227 while Justin is way worse with a .095 batting average since the start of the postseason. Meanwhile, Buster Posey and Austin Slater could pave the way for the Giants to solve Urias. Posey has a career .519 wOBA in 20 at-bats, while Slater owns a career 0.453 wOBA against the Dodgers’ lefty in 19 at-bats.

Final Dodgers-Giants Prediction & Pick

Game 5 could be a heart-pounding game that will be close from start to finish. For this Dodgers-Giants prediction, the safest bet would be the Dodgers’ run line.
