The San Francisco Giants take on the Arizona Diamondbacks. Check out our MLB odds series for our Giants Diamondbacks prediction and pick.
Alex Wood goes to the mound for the Giants, while Tyler Gilbert takes the hill for the Diamondbacks.
Alex Wood has a 5.03 ERA, and the thing to note about Wood is that whereas some pitchers have high ERAs because their April ERAs were eight runs and then their June ERAs were around three runs, Wood is a different story. He has been consistently below average this year. He didn't have an astronomically high ERA early in the season before making adjustments and turning in the right direction as the summer arrived. No, he has been steady in his mediocrity in 2022. Wood's April ERA: 4.19. May: 5.32. June: 5.34. He hasn't gotten better over the past two months. He hasn't gotten worse. He has been essentially the same. Even though the Giants are on a big losing skid, Wood is not the man one would trust to stop that streak.
Tyler Gilbert came out of nowhere to throw a no-hitter against the Padres last August. Remember that? That was Gilbert's one big moment of fame and glory in the majors. Otherwise, he has had an unremarkable career. This year, he has made just four appearances and pitched just 16 innings, giving up 15 runs. It has been a rough ride for Gilbert, whose sample size is very small but whose numbers are so unimpressive that it's hard to trust him in this situation.

Why The Giants Could Cover the Spread
The Giants have lost five straight and 11 of 14. They are careening toward the .500 mark and are closer to last place (Colorado) in the National League West than to first place (the Dodgers). This is a hugely important game and a very urgent moment in the Giants' season. They badly need to stabilize before the All-Star break so that they don't fall too far behind the Padres, Braves, and Cardinals, three teams in front of them in the National League wild card chase. The importance of this game plus the presence of Tyler Gilbert on the mound for Arizona should give San Francisco the push it needs to win this game.
Why The Diamondbacks Could Cover the Spread
After hammering the Giants on Monday, when Carlos Rodon — a very good pitcher — made the start for San Francisco, the Diamondbacks get Alex Wood, a very inferior starter compared to Rodon. The Diamondbacks' bats have come alive in recent games, so this is a pitching matchup in which they should be expected to continue to score big numbers.
Final Giants-Diamondbacks Prediction & Pick
If you don't trust either team, that's fine. You can simply pick the over here, with two pitchers who show no signs of throwing a strong game on Tuesday evening in the desert.
