The San Francisco Giants will start a new series with the Philadelphia Phillies as the two teams square off on Memorial Day. It's time to continue our MLB odds coverage with a Giants-Phillies prediction and pick.
The Giants avoided a sweep by defeating the Cincinnati Reds 6-4 on Sunday. Evan Longoria led the team with three RBIs. Also, Alex Cobb went six innings, allowing two earned runs on eight strikeouts and three walks. He ended up with the no-decision as the Giants took the lead in the later innings. The Giants improved to 25-21 and sit in third place in the NL West.
The Phillies fell 5-4 in 10 innings to the New York Mets in walk-off fashion. They rallied from a 3-1 deficit when Nick Castellanos smashed a three-run home run to deep left-center in the eighth inning to give them the lead. However, the Phillies blew the lead in the ninth when Nick Plummer crushed a solo shot to deep right field to tie the game and send it into extras. The Mets won the game in the 10th when Eduardo Escobar clipped an RBI double to win the game. The Phillies fell to 21-27 and sit in third place in the NL East.

Why The Giants Could Cover The Spread
San Francisco will go with Logan Webb on the hill today. Webb is 5-1 with a 3.54 ERA. He tossed five innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits and six strikeouts in his last start. However, he has not won a game since May 7 as he has been embroiled in three straight no-decisions. Webb has also allowed three or fewer runs in all but one start. Additionally, he has allowed two or fewer runs in four of his starts. Webb gets the support of an offense that has been steady.
The Giants rank ninth in the majors in batting average, third in on-base percentage, fifth in runs, eighth in home runs, and sixth in slugging percentage. Joc Pederson is one of their stars as he has 11 home runs and 27 RBIs. Also, Wilmer Flores has been solid with four home runs and 25 RBIs. Pederson is on a five-game hitting streak while Flores has hit safely in four of his past five games. However, the issue with the Red this past weekend was the offense. The Giants won Sunday but left six runners on base. In addition to that, they left 11 runners stranded on Saturday and seven on Friday. Driving runners home was an issue in the series against the Reds, and San Francisco hopes it does not continue.
The Giants will cover the spread if they get a good outing out of Webb. Additionally, they need Pederson, Flores, and the rest of their offense to produce and bring runners home.
Why The Phillies Could Cover The Spread
Philadelphia will go with Kyle Gibson on the hill. Gibson is 3-2 with a 3.94 ERA. He tossed five innings in his last start, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts. He has been solid throughout the month. Moreover, he has allowed two or fewer runs in five of his last six starts. His consistency has been tremendous. However, Gibson is not going deep into games. He is not getting through six innings and has hit seven innings once this season. Gibson will try to get that mark here and hopes his offense continues to roll.
The Phillies are 10th in batting average, 14th in on-base percentage, ninth in runs, ninth in home runs, and seventh in slugging percentage. Bryce Harper continues to be a marvel, as he is hitting 10 home runs with 32 RBIs. Also, Kyle Schwarber has clipped 10 home runs with 22 RBIs. Rhys Hoskins has also smashed seven home runs with 23 RBIs. The issue lately with the Phillies is inconsistent hitting. The offense was mainly flat for seven innings on Sunday. Additionally, they managed just two runs on Saturday. Their pitching is not good enough for the offense to slump.
The Phillies will cover the spread if they can get a good performance out of Gibson. Likewise, they need the bats to power up. It would be a certain victory if Harper, Schwarber, and Hoskins all smashed the baseball.
Final Giants-Phillies Prediction & Pick
The Giants and Phillies are both tossing out good pitchers today. However, the Giants are favored, which does not bode well for their odds. Expect the Phillies to keep this close and then take down the Giants at the very end. The Phillies cover the spread.
Final Giants-Phillies Prediction & Pick: Phillies: +1.5 (-152)
