Logan Gilbert takes the bump for the Mariners, while Patrick Sandoval gets the assignment for the Angels.

Logan Gilbert has a 2.28 ERA. He has made 14 starts this season. In four consecutive starts from May 6-22, he allowed 14 runs. In his other 10 starts, he has allowed a total of 10 runs. Those two and a half weeks in May represented the only time this season Gilbert has noticeably struggled with his command. Before and after that series of four starts, he has been electric for the Mariners.

It is notable that the Mariners are 9-5 in Gilbert's 14 starts. They went 0-4 in those four rough outings, but are 9-1 when the good version of Gilbert has shown up. The one loss, however, was to the Angels. Gilbert allowed only two runs this past Sunday, but Seattle got shut out by Angel pitching.

This brings us to Patrick Sandoval. He limited the Mariners to one run in six innings a week ago on June 18. He has a 2.70 ERA and, more precisely, has a 2.70 ERA in the month of June. He did not allow a single earned run in three April starts, but his ERA for the month of May was 4.13. He had two mediocre starts plus a genuinely bad outing — his only truly subpar performance of the season — on May 29 when he gave up six runs to the Blue Jays in three innings. Sandoval's stamina is an issue for the Angels, who would prefer to not have to go to their middle relievers any more than necessary. Sandoval, over 11 starts, has averaged under 5 2/3 innings per start. The Angels need him to become a pitcher who regularly pitches into the seventh inning.

Why The Mariners Could Cover the Spread

The Mariners have won five straight road games. They frankly have been a better road team than a home team over the past six weeks. Seattle's win over the Angels on Friday night showed that the Mariners are capable of fighting back against the Halos after dropping four of five home games to Los Angeles a week ago in the Pacific Northwest.  Just when you think the Mariners have checked out of their season, they show just enough signs of life to suggest that in the second half of the season, they can still make a run at a wild card spot.

The Angels have been terrible over the past five weeks. The Mariners are a better team, even though the Angels have more superstars.

Why The Angels Could Cover the Spread

After losing on Friday, the Angels are in a good bounce-back spot on Saturday. Mike Trout continues to rake against the Mariners. He hit another homer on Friday, marking the sixth home run in the last six games versus Seattle. An in-form Mike Trout who is seeing the ball well is a big hammer for the Angels to have in the bag.

Final Mariners-Angels Prediction & Pick

These are both mediocre ballclubs, so the total becomes the more reliable play whenever Seattle and the Halos go at it. They went under the total on Friday. The two starters here are good pitchers. Stay with the under again.

Final Mariners-Angels Prediction & Pick: Under 8
