The Seattle Mariners take on the New York Mets. Check out our MLB odds series for our Mariners Mets prediction and pick.

George Kirby gets the start for the Mariners, while Chris Bassitt takes the hill for the Mets.

Kirby threw six shutout innings this past Sunday against the Rays in his MLB debut. He could not have hoped for a better start to his big-league career. The Mariners play in a pitcher-friendly ballpark, but Kirby still had to execute his pitches, and he had to do so against a Rays team known for working counts and generally making life difficult for pitchers. The Mariners have to be thrilled about Kirby's debut, but now comes the process of trying to sustain results and showing staying power as opposing MLB ballclubs gather more tape and more of a scouting report. This will be something to monitor when formulating a Mariners Mets prediction for Saturday's game.

Chris Bassitt has a 2.45 ERA. He has pitched at least 5 2/3 innings in all six starts this season. He has given up more than three runs in only one of his six starts. He has given up more than one run in only two of his six starts. He has been a very consistent and reliable pitcher, a key reason the Mets are comfortably in first place in the National League East. Max Scherzer gets the headlines, and he is terrific to be sure, but Bassitt is part of a strong rotation; a team can't win a division title with just one or two elite pitchers. It needs more help, and Bassitt has provided that in the first several weeks of the 2022 campaign.

Why The Mariners Could Cover the Spread

They just beat the Mets with Max Scherzer pitching. The M's are an entirely capable ballclub. They actually started this season 11-6 and looked like a really good squad. Then their hitting fell off a cliff, and their pitching — while not awful — has wobbled enough to lead to a steady stream of losses and a sub-.500 record. Yet, it's only May 14. There are four and a half months left in the season, and we should expect the Mariners to get better and make a run at the American League wild card spot.

The Mariners also have to be confident with George Kirby on the mound. He was superb in his first big-league game, so he will take the bump with a lot of confidence in this game. Moreover, he knows that the Mets might be doubting themselves just a little after managing only one run against Mariner pitching on Friday night. Seattle certainly scouted the New York batting order quite well, so if Kirby executes his pitches, he has a chance to deliver another great outing. This is part of the backdrop to any Mariners Mets pick you might consider.

Why The Mets Could Cover the Spread

After getting shut down by the Mariners on Friday night, the Mets are likely to have a better approach at the plate on Saturday. New York has shown this season that after a bad game, it usually bounces back. The Mets lost the first game of a doubleheader this past Sunday against the Phillies. They won the nightcap. They lost to the Washington Nationals earlier this week and blew a 3-0 lead. They won the next day against the Nats. The Mets have been excellent at avoiding two- or three-game losing streaks the past week. That alone is reason to recommend them in this matchup.

What should also work in the Mets' favor is that Chris Bassitt has been very consistent for them all season. There is no reason to distrust Bassitt against a light-hitting Mariner lineup which scored only two runs on Friday and has been slumping for most of the season to date.

Final Mariners-Mets Prediction & Pick

If Bassitt pitches the way he normally does, the Mets should find at least three runs against Kirby if not more. The Mets are a very good play here.

Final Mariners-Mets Prediction & Pick: Mets -1.5
