The San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs are ready for Game 3 of the series! It's time to continue our MLB odds series with a Padres-Cubs prediction and pick.

The Cubs got off to a fast start last night on Padres' starter Sean Manaea by scoring five runs early. The Padres went on to score 12 unanswered to win the first two games of the series. Luke Voit and Jorge Alfaro both smashed home runs and the Padres offense seems to finally get going. The Friars have been relying on their pitching and it's working as they are (39-24) on the season. The Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers are tied for first place in the NL West Division but the Dodgers have the edge in win percentage. The Cubs are (23-38) on the year and are only a half-game ahead of the Cincinnati Reds for last in the NL Central Division.

Why The Padres Could Cover The Spread

For the first time this season, Ryan Weathers is back and scheduled to start. The young lefty is (4-7) with a 5.32 ERA in 94.2 innings in his Padres career. Not many remember, but he was forced to start at 20 years old against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS in 2020. The Southpaw isn't doing that great in AAA but gets the call-up start tonight to get the Padres' rotation an extra day off.

The offense was clicking last night as they finally got to starter Kyle Hendricks in the 6th inning. Down 5-0, the Friars stormed back to score 12 straight runs led by Luke Voit. The former Yankee is finally finding his groove with the Padres as he has five multi-hit games since June 2nd. Voit now has seven home runs on the season after missing a few weeks with an injury.

Jake Cronenworth is someone to keep an eye on right now. The Padres second-baseman has really gotten it going lately. After starting the season slow and hitting under .200, the lefty is now batting .238 and has 37 RBIs on the season. He already has six hits this series as his average is starting to climb. In the last 15 days, Cronenworth is batting .321 with three home runs and 18 RBIs. This is the type of production the Padres were looking for and it's crucial to help star Manny Machado (who is one hit away from 1500 on the career).

Why The Cubs Could Cover The Spread

Starting tonight for the Cubbies is right-hander Caleb Kilian. He's started one game this season and he went five innings giving up three hits, three runs, and striking out six. It was a solid start to the career for Kilian but now he has a tough matchup against a team on the rise.

Patrick Wisdom, Frank Schwindel, Wilson Contreras, and Ian Happ are the main pull for the Cubs this season. The offense has found success this season but the rotation is what is hurting them. If Kilian can get the Cubs a quality start, then the Cubs will have a shot at covering this spread. Weathers won't come out and throw a gem in his season debut so the Cubs have a chance to score some runs tonight.

Expect a right-handed heavy lineup tonight as the Cubs will try and attack him early. With how poorly the Padres bullpen has been this season, Chicago is aware that they can score runs late.

Final Padres-Cubs Prediction & Pick

This is a tough pick to make with the inexperience on the mound tonight. The Cubs should be able to keep this one close. Take Chicago to cover this spread at home tonight.

Final Padres-Cubs Prediction & Pick: Cubs +1.5 (+125)
