The San Diego Padres take on the Arizona Diamondbacks. Check out our MLB odds series for our Padres Diamondbacks prediction and pick.

Sean Manaea gets the start for the Padres, while Zac Gallen takes the mound for the Diamondbacks.

Sean Manaea has a 3.87 ERA. On June 14, he gave up five runs in four innings in a rough outing against the Cubs. He bounced back in his last appearance, limiting the Diamondbacks to two runs in six innings. Manaea threw seven no-hit innings against the D-Backs on April 8, so he has had a lot of success against Arizona so far this season. His month of May was bumpy — his ERA for the month was 4.50 — but his June ERA is nearly a full run lower, at 3.52. The Padres would like Manaea to get that ERA under three runs before too long, but at least he has moved in the right direction after struggling for a number of weeks.

Zac Gallen has a 2.92 ERA. Last week, he limited the Padres to one earned run in six innings. He walked three hitters but struck out 11 with good, late movement on his pitches. Gallen was brilliant in the first month and a half of this season. Going into a May 24 game versus the Royals, Gallen's ERA was just 1.14. He was a Cy Young Award contender. Then came a scratchy performance against Kansas City. The Royals got him for six runs in 5 1/3 innings. A few starts later, the Phillies scored six runs against him (four earned) in 1 2/3 innings. Gallen has been punched in the mouth a few times this year, but  he showed last week against the Padres that he can adjust and move past a bad start when it happens.

Why The Padres Could Cover the Spread

The Padres swept the Diamondbacks last week in San Diego. The Padres might struggle with the Dodgers and Rockies in the National League West, but they play a lot better against the D-Backs. Also, Sean Manaea's improvements in June — while modest and not gigantic — point to another good start in this game on Tuesday in Phoenix. Manaea doesn't always pitch to his full potential, but he has certainly adjusted to a very rough month of May. The fact that he has done well against Arizona hitters this year doesn't hurt his odds of performing at a high level against the D-Backs. San Diego should feel confident about this pitching matchup, especially since Zac Gallen isn't the same force he was in the first several weeks of the season.

Why The Diamondbacks Could Cover the Spread

After a largely bad week in which they got swept by the Padres and lost the weekend series at home to the Detroit Tigers, the Diamondbacks are going to be highly motivated for this game. What also helps them is that on Sunday, an offensive slump came crashing to a halt in an 11-7 win over Detroit. Arizona received contributions from several different players, exactly the kind of game which should help a team as it moves into a new series against a new opponent.

Final Padres-Diamondbacks Prediction & Pick

If you're not sold on either team, take the over. Manaea and Gallen are familiar to these two sets of hitters, who should be able to see the ball better and square up more pitches in this game.
