The Texas Rangers take on the Los Angeles Angels. Check out our MLB odds series for our Rangers Angels prediction and pick.

Glenn Otto gets the ball for the Rangers, while Reid Detmers takes the hill for the Angels.

Glenn Otto has a 5.55 ERA, but that is mostly the product of one terrible start on May 14 in which the Red Sox hammered him for eight runs in four innings. In Otto's four other appearances this season, he has been decent — nothing special, but perfectly competent. Otto allowed seven runs in 20 1/3 innings in those four starts. Texas will definitely take that level of pitching from Otto. Texas played the Angels last week; Otto did not come up in the rotation against the Halos.

Reid Detmers has a 4.15 ERA. He made national news earlier this year by throwing a no-hitter against the Rays on May 10. He then struggled against the Rangers last week. Texas got to him for three runs in just 3 2/3 innings. Before the no-hitter on May 10, Detmers had been an average pitcher. He had pitched 22 innings and given up 13 runs in the starts preceding his big night against the Rays. It will be fascinating to see if Detmers can regain dominance and command, or if that magic night becomes more and more of an aberration as the year goes on. If you are thinking about a Rangers Angels prediction, you know you have to think about Detmers' expected trajectory in 2022.

Why The Rangers Could Cover the Spread

The Rangers swept the Angels last week and were able to contain the Halos' bats. Texas has frankly received very solid pitching this season and has given people reason to rethink the calculus of a Rangers Angels pick. If Marcus Semien can start hitting, Texas becomes a very formidable team. The Rangers have often been a great-hit, no-pitching team, but that's not really the case this year. The pitching is respectable and can enable the Rangers to hang with the Angels. Glenn Otto has been better than his fat ERA indicates. One start distorted his numbers.

One also has to realize that Reid Detmers has been a relatively average pitcher this season in starts other than his no-no on May 10 against the Rays. Detmers has to prove that his floor can be higher. It's not about his ceiling; his baseline averages need to be better. Until then, he doesn't deserve the full benefit of the doubt.

Why The Angels Could Cover the Spread

After losing four in a row last week, the Angels have stabilized by winning three in a row. They're back on track. They got swept by Texas on the road last week but bounced back against the Rangers by winning Tuesday night's game. That should be enough to calm any fears that the Angels are unraveling. Anything but. They are in position for an American League wild card berth. They are a better team than Texas.

Final Rangers-Angels Prediction & Pick

The Angels have sorted things out. Detmers might not dominate here, but he will be better than he was in his previous outing, and that will be enough versus an inconsistent Texas offense.

Final Rangers Angels Prediction & Pick: Angels -1.5
