The Tampa Bay Rays take on the Seattle Mariners. Check out our MLB odds series, for our Rays Mariners prediction and pick.
Ryan Yarbrough gets the ball for the Rays, while George Kirby will get the start for the Mariners.
There isn't a whole lot to say about this pitching matchup, which makes the Rays Mariners odds hard to assess. The MLB odds are murky because Yarbrough has thrown only 2 1/3 innings this season, in just one appearance against the Oakland Athletics in which he was touched up for five runs on six hits. Kirby, meanwhile, is making his Major League Baseball debut in this game. The 24-year-old will try to give the Mariners a boost in a game they badly need to win. There is a lot to consider in this game, but the pitching matchup feels like a total wild card and not something which can easily be predicted.

Why The Rays Could Cover the Spread
The Rays have won each of the first three games of this series, stretching their winning streak to six games. The Mariners, by losing each of the first three games of this series, have watched their losing streak balloon to six games. These teams are going in perpendicularly opposite directions. The Rays have won eight of their last 10 games, and the Mariners have lost nine of their last 10. One team is playing great baseball, the other horrible baseball. That's not a bad reason to go with Tampa Bay in this game.
What is also worth noting is that the Rays blew a late lead on Friday night in Game 2 of this series but rebounded to win the game in the top of the ninth. That game really seemed to take the starch out of the Mariners, who are in a funk and have clearly been punched in the mouth by a confident Tampa Bay team which looks a lot like the 2021 group which won the American League East. The Rays are 18-10 after their sluggish start to the season. They have everything going their way. They will also face a pitcher, George Kirby, who is making his MLB debut. That can't be easy for Kirby or the Mariners.
Why The Mariners Could Cover the Spread
After losing six straight games, the flip side of the argument in a Rays Mariners prediction is that Seattle will finally win one. This Mariner team looked on paper like a division championship contender. The Mariners got Robbie Ray, the 2021 Cy Young Award winner in the American League, along with Jesse Winker from the Cincinnati Reds. There's a lot of talent on this roster, and the M's did start the season 11-6. However, Seattle has collapsed in this last 10-game stretch.
If considering a Rays Mariners pick, simply realize that it's a long season which is only five weeks old. There are still over 130 games left to play and the Mariners are bound to snap out of this funk. Given that Ryan Yarbrough has barely pitched this season, it's a decent bet that he won't be especially sharp in this game. The MLB odds point to a good day for Seattle.
Final Rays-Mariners Prediction & Pick
The Rays are playing great and the Mariners are playing poorly, but the Rays have often struggled in Seattle and would defy the odds if they swept a four-game series on the road. The Mariners are bound to get a game. Picking them up plus a run and a half is a solid play.
Final Rays-Mariners Prediction & Pick: Mariners +1.5
